Got back from SF a couple of days ago, actually met up with Lars who had an interesting thing to say about bass...the girl who was one of the two winners of the Launch Party bass contest (Elena Repetto of Imajika) on July 6th impressed him, called her a female Geezer Butler, then went on to say that if it came down to an equally skilled male and female bassist, Metallica would go with the woman just to say F.U. to the world.
I hope they do hire a woman bass player. That would be so cool. (Of course, I am prejudiced because I played bass in a nu-metal style band and also my very first public song ever played was "Enter Sandman." I wish they would choose me, but a woman old enough to be their mother probably wouldn't be their idea of cool.)

The other thing that I'm trying to understand is why Metallica? why not Anthrax or Slayer or Megadeth?
Yeah! I like Anthrax but I only own 1 cd with them (among the living). They seem like a band that could be huge but I donīt know why they havenīt been. Slayer on the other hand is "to hard" (can music be "to hard"?) for the big masses. But of course they are gods in the metal world. Megadeth has always been in the shadows of Metallica (see the "megadeth - behind the misic" dvd/vcr). I think that is so sad because my heart lies (sp?) closer to the music of megadeth than that of metallica. And I just love Elleffsons bass playing. I would choose Megadeth over Metallica any day actually.

Not only that, but I was positive that Cliff was killed during the Puppets tour (1986) and Jason was expected to learn Big M's set-list in a matter of weeks.
You are right. He was killed on E4:an (a road) in Sweden after their gig in Lund I think it was. Sad that he died in my country. And one of my friends have his birthday the same date (allthough he was born in 1983). For more on Cliff see: http://www.cliff-god.com/

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I liked Load and ReLoad. Good bluesy hard rock albums. Kind of remind me of Corrison of Conforminty. On that note though, my fav album is Kill 'Em All.

I love anthrax. anything (studio wise) after among the living (and including) was off the wall. The john bush albums are probably the best. If you every see a copy of "Volume 8: the threat is real!" get it! It's pretty rare. Anthrax's problem with become huge is finding a stedy record label. They are recording a new album right now and they are trying to seal the deal so that nothing happens and the album stays. Watch BTM-Anthrax next time its on, you understand more about their problems. The new album is due in oct. and I know that I will be pushing the hell out of it to get my buddies to buy it. Anthrax is one of the best metal bands. They have an EXCELLENT drummer, Charlie Benate(sp?), this guy owns lars IMO. Their bassist is awesome too. He's no Cliff Burton, but he's just as good as david ellefson I would say. Anthrax is a great band, I highly recomend them. Look for their best of album called "Attack of the killer A's",I bought it from FYE for $5!

David Ellefson is a good bassist. Some of my favorite megadeth bass lines include:

Hook in mouth(So far.. so good)
Mastermind(Cryptic Wings)
and a couple from Rust in peace that I can't think of right now. But to me, megadeth just makes good music to the musicians ear. I think I would rather listen to metallica than megadeth when I'm out driving but I like megadeth for at home or to jam to.

Agreed Slayer is too heavy some times. I like the "new" tone that they picked up from the past 2 albums thought.

My favorite Metallica album... hmmm... Probably Justice. But I like Justice, MoP, and Ride the lightning pretty equally. I really dig the old garage days stuff too.

METALLICA

IMO Metallica was finished after the Black Album. (as far as being a metal band)

No more metal for them. Oh well. Plenty of other bands who didn't go soft.

FRANK BELLO from Anthrax is one of my fave metal bassists. Also one of the few that plays fingerstyle. That dude has stamina!! Watch the N.F.V. video from 1987 (live in London) and be amazed.

Here-is-my-personal-rating-of-Moneytallica's-studio-albums.(THIS-IS-TOTAL-OPINION,I-DONT-MEAN-TO-PERSONALLY-OFFEND-ANYONE,BUT-I-WILL-SPEAK-MY-MIND)

Kill-'Em-All----------->9
A-very-good-album-IMO.Harsher-and-more-brash-sounding-then-any-other-album,which-i-kinda-like."Metal-Militia","Seek-and-Destroy","Whiplash"-and-"Motorbreath",among-others,never-fail-to-get-me-going.One-thing-I-also-kinda-like-on-this-album-is-that-the-vocals-take-a-back-seat-to-the-guitars,a-unique-trend-present-in-this-album.-(I-can-totally-understand-how-people-wouldn't-like-that.)The-only-thing-this-album-lacks-to-me-is-versatility.

Ride-The-Lightning--------->10
Tied-for-my-favorite;I-think-this-album-freakin'-rules!!!!!!!-It-has-my-favorite-ballad-by-ANY-BAND-EVER-in-"Fade-to-Black",
(I-know-this-might-sound-blasphemous,-I-actually-like-it-more-than-"Stairway-to-Heaven")
my-second-favorite-instrumental-ever-in-"The-Call-of-the-Kutulu",a-good-compromise-between-agression-and-ballad-in-"For-Whom-the-Bell-Tolls"-and-pure-aggression-in-amazing-songs-like-"Fight-Fire-With-Fire"and-"Creeping-Death".From-beginning-to-end,it-just-rips.

Master-of-Puppets-------->10
This-album-also-rocks-SERIOUS-@SS.It-has-my-favorite-instrumental-BY-ANYONE-in-"Orion",a-great-ballad-in-"Welcome-Home(Sanitarium)",and-a-good-opening-track-in-"Battery."-However-
THERE-IS-NO-QUESTION,AT-LEAST-IN-MY-MIND,WHAT-THE-DOMINATE-SONG-ON-THIS-RECORD-IS,AND-THAT'S-THE-TITLE-TRACK.IT-IS-EASILY-ONE-OF-MY-10-FAVORITE-SONGS-EVER,-WITHOUT-QUESTION.-"Disposable-Heroes"-also-rules.
The-vocals-on-this-album-sound-better-than-on-RTL,but-RTL-has-more-consistently-good-songs-TO-ME.

...And-Justice-For-All-------->9-
Metallica-as-we-knew-them-is-beginning-to-erode-after-the-death-of-Cliff-Burton.Not-completely-though;there-are-some-AWESOME-songs-on-this-album-despite-the-lack-of-bass,which-was-because-James,Lars,and-Kirk-thought-it-would-be-a-cute-initiation-ritual-to-turn-down-bassist-Jason-Newsted's-Ampegs-in-the-studio;showing-their-utter-and-complete-lack-of-maturity,-togetherness-,and-other-positive-qualities-necessary-in-a-great-band.However,three-songs-on-this-record-stand-out-to-me-as-OUTSTANDING.-My-personal-favorite-is-"Harvester-of-Sorrow"-a-headbanger's-delight.The-two-others-are-"Blackened"-and-"Dyer's-Eve",fast,agressive-tracks-that-burn."One"-is-also-kinda-interesting.

Metallica(Black-Album)------->five-
I-really-only-like-one-song-on-this-album.I-find-it-plain,far-too-placid,-and-somewhat-boring.Anyways,the-one-song-is,yes,"Enter-Sandman."-Although-it-is-FAR-FROM-METAL,I-find-it-to-be-a-great-hard-rock-song.

Load---------->2
O.............M.........G........how-could-the-once-Masters-of-Puppets-stoop-THIS-low?-I-tried-to-listen-to-it-fully,repeatedly,-to-try-to-convince-myself-that-"songs",if-they-may-be-called-that,like-"Ain't-My-B1tch"were-still-Metallica.It-was-more-like-recycled-Metallica-byproduct-IMO....

Re-Load---->1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!
And-I-thought-Load-was-bad.......this-album-was-even-more-mindless-drivel........songs-as-bad-as-"Fuel"-and-"The-Memory-Remains"-actually-look-good-compared-to-the-rest-of-the-feceslike_sludge-on-this-album.

S+M--------->unknown
Probably-better-than-the-last-two,-but-I-really-want-nothing-to-do-with-any-present-Metallica;-thus-I-refuse-to-write-a-review-of-an-album-I-haven't-heard.

There-ya-have-it,my-personal-opinion.Take-from-it-what-you-wish.

I watched the performances @ hob.com (and recorded them with sound forge, gonna put them on cd ) and he amazes me on how much power he puts into he playing but keeps going! I'm gonna have to get a couple of videos of them playing live.

I've been a lifelong metallica fan. The first album I ever bought was Master of Puppets (I was 5 at the time I think), "Orion" made me want to play bass. My favourite album has always been the first three, I couldn't possibly choose from between those. On another note, I think it is unfair to say that they went downhill after Cliff's death, that was a devastating loss, and Cliff was a massive contribution to the band's style, so therefore when they got Jason the feel of the band changed drastically. That doesn't mean they got worse. ...And Justice For All is the most evil album I have ever heard, just listening to it makes me very sad because you could tell that the band put all their heart and emotions into that album. Following that up would be extremely difficult, people still expected them to be the evil speed metal band of yesteryear, but I think that they just realised that after ...And Justice For All they really couldn't follow that up and to keep trying to be an "evil" band would be futile, they would sound half hearted. So they kept their music dark, but not truly scary, it became more upbeat, still heavy metal, but something you could listen to and say, "Cool" instead of "Whoa, that's heavy". They aren't bad, they may not be what you enjoy personally, but they're just different, not bad.

On another note, S&M is a great album I think, Metallica decided to show something a little different, much more artistic, and alot of the songs were much more majestic IMO. For example, The Call of Ktulu has never been better. There was a little problem with James's voice, it shows his age and when doing older songs like "Master of Puppets" and "Battery" it didn't sound right. The symphony is a great addition to metallica's sound, and I think it is a very well made album.

Well,Anthrax and Slayer are cool. I like Megadeth's music,but I could never get past Dave Mustaine's poor excuse for "singing/whining". -Luke

I've been a Metallica fan for a long time (obviously) and while I like everything they have done, the Black Album is my favorite with Pastor of Muppets a close second. It really annoys me to hear people say "oh, Metallica has gone soft", I really liked their old stuff but I probably wouldn't be a fan anymore if they still sounded just like that. Some people say they think Metallica is boring now, well how boring and pathetic would it be if they were 40 year old guys still writing Kill Em All type songs? Personally, I enjoy hearing a talented band mature and experiment musically, and regardless of which style Metallica is playing I have always found their music to be thoughtful and well written. I was a pretty big Creed fan once upon a time but now I've lost interest because it's just the same old thing, whereas with Metallica every album has a different feel to it.

I've listened to a lot of Metallica, but the only CD I ever bought was S&M. Just amazing, IMO. The symphony, and the rock energy, and driving melodies and rhythms are just awesome. 10/10 from me, I rock out to it in my car all the time.
