Is this meant to be lifted from the original recording?

Yep, seperated by using Rockband.
This has been done to the songs And Justice For All and Ride The Lightning as well

Interesting - no gallop. No wonder it sounds so clean on the recordings.

Let this be a lesson to all you metal bassists - sometimes not replicating a fast riff note for note actually helps the riff sound more solid and makes it groove more.

I didn't think Rockband used the originals? I thought it was a cover band playing all tracks, to avoid paying performance royalties?

Nop, that was guitar hero.
There are some tracks, even on guitar hero, that are the actual mastered tracks.
Most of the metallica tracks on rockband are originals. Theres a list on the rockband site that tells if songs are originals or covers. The vocals on that track are also james hetfield's vocals.

yeah i was surprised to find out that there was no gallop.

wow, there are many more metallica bass tracks to be heard.
if that's really cliffs playing which it sounds like, i must say it's really oldschool. the vibe and feeling is all there but the new tracks sound tighter though.

edit: also listen to jason's bass tracks. they're very good, why were they turned down?

nah, that aint cliff. cliff hits some harmonic thirds and uses overdubbed progressions on the whole album. like the intro to damage inc or orion...

find a hi-fi stereo with a record player, and listen to master of puppets on vinyl.... 'ol cliffie shines thru and you can hear what i'm talking about.

also jason sounds like him altough nobody can know because he was never audible and the death magnetic tracks seem to have robs signature.

The bass on the black album is audible more than any other metallica album.
