Don't know if many, if any, has heard this version on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TOCBo_OYl4

So there was actually bass-guitar on One!! I was sure I could feel it aswell, although I've always been told it was completely turned down. Thought I'd share it, I think Jasons tone on the justice album was remarkable (see also, Blackened and ...And justice for all) and a real shame that it was turned down to being inaudible in tonality. When I listen to the normal version of One after this I can actually put it in and feel it. But it should also be heard!

Does anyone know exactly why, or have a theory, why it was turned down? Was it a part of James's and Lars's hazing of Jason as a new member, or some other reason?

That has been said.

Also that album was mixed horribly anyway.

Lars turned it off himself, it was dialled at one, and Lars was quoted as sayin "Thats one too high" and turned it off.

That's such a shame... He played really melodic on One. Even though I'm danish, I'm not very proud of Lars Ulrich as for me being a bassist!

About his tone, can you dial it in by just using a normal Ampeg SVT or does he use some sort of pedal for the grit? It's very rough sounding.

Who else really hears some compression on the drums?

I will agree, I really liked the bass line. I am almost tempted to play around with that song a little.

The Decibel interview/article about the Justice album is the most detailed description of the album I have seen. Jason apparently was at the studio for just one day recording all his parts, and he was the only Metallica member present. It also talks on Cliff's involvement on the album. A few of the To Live Is To Die riffs (including the main one) were his (and the lyrics as credited in the notes), and Kirk recalls jamming out the Dyers Eve riff with Cliff.

Despite the lack of bass presence on the album, this era of Metallica is what I would define as "classic Metallica". When they still had the metal look and sound (though I'm a big fan of the Load albums) and finally exploded worldwide.

Wow, that's some wicked tone.

I thought Jason was exclusively a pick player? There's at least one shot of him in there playing with his fingers.

Does anybody know if he recorded this with a 4 or a 5? The AJFA book I have has it as a 4string, but he's playing a 5er in the video...

Thanks for the link!

yeah, Lars and James used to work on stuff together and not with the bass player. sounds like they just said, well, you play and we'll dial you in where we feel like it.

No offense to Jason, but I'm glad they got Robert.

They should have Brenden O'Brien remix And Justice For All.

I love this song,
and this is pretty cool

but without the guitars it feels like the point of the song is missed completely.

Really point out how sloppy Lars' drumming is, I can't believe an ego that big on someone so talentless.

Love the tone he got. I wish it was in the song. Sounds like James has a huge ego.

To comment on Lars' drumming: I've heard live recordings where his meter resembles a rollercoaster ride. Never thought he was good. I never liked Metalica. I have to admit liking that song, though.

"Newsted: For the entire existence of METALLICA — and the only band Lars has ever been in is METALLICA — he has had only the rhythm guitar and the vocal coming out of his monitor at 130 decibels behind his head. There's no bass in his monitor at all, so it's not a situation where the drummer and the bass player go together on groove, like in any band I've ever listened to. So that was real different for me to get used to and for any bass player to deal with. And Robert [Trujillo] probably has to deal with it to this day. There's just no bass coming out of the drummer's monitor. So you have to think of that as part of the equation."

that would explain why the bass & drums are disconnected at points in the live show Cunning Stunts.
in contrast I'd bet the drummers in Megadeth had Ellefson's bass loud in their monitors.

That bass tone is "interesting" to say the least. The playing doesn't seem very even either.

Lars may have been on to something turning that knob to zero.
