METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich called in to KROQ's "The Kevin and Bean Show" yesterday (Monday, May 5) to officially announce the band's participation in the station's annual Weenie Roast on May 17 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in in Irvine, California. During the seven-minute chat, Lars spoke about the progress of the recording sessions for the group's new album and METALLICA's upcoming touring activities. A couple of excerps follow:
On the status of the new album:
"Knock on wood, this week should be our last week in the studio, and then we're gonna come and hang with you guys next week and then see some friends in Tucson also next weekend. Then we're off to Europe and start, basically, playing outdoor festival shows in Europe as part of our annual summer vacation in Europe. Then the record should come in September."
On rumors that the album will be released in October:
"We're planning on putting this baby out at some point in September, like I said, unless something [drastic happens], what they call in the music business an 'act of god.'"
On the MissionMetallica.com web site, which will go live next week:
"Yeah, it rolls next Monday (May 12). It's basically… the whole kind of 'get a free DVD with the album and watch the making of the album' and all that type of stuff. We thought, instead of doing the usual DVDs and all that, why don't we just do it on the Internet and people can kind of tune in every day, watch clips, contests, get updates for what's going on with the record and kind of watch the last couple of months of songtitles, album titles, final mixes, some broadcasts from the tour in Europe. So it's kind of a little bit of a countdown type of thing. It should be fun."
On when fans can expect to hear new material:
"I mean, obviously, you'll probably hear about it about five minutes after we finish playing it — thanks to the Internet, which we appreciate. I would say that based on the rehearsals in the last week, we're obviously playing a bunch of new songs, and at some point very, very soon we're gonna start playing some new stuff live. Whether that's gonna happen in Irvine in a couple of weeks or not, we haven't quite figured that one out yet, but it'll be pretty soon, trust me."

I was just listening to Load the other day, that record rocks. I hope it is as good as St Anger, that was awesome too! |

Metallica hit a real slump with the black album (which wasn't a bad record, but not up to their usual standard) and they've been on the up ever since. |

Black, Load, Reload: Too damn poppy to be considered "metal". Maybe "hard rock"? JMO
St. Anger: Even considering it sounds like it was recorded in a garage..... it was "meh". More of a Nu-Metal feel to it.
Cliff Burton flying out of a bus, and that singer actually singing killed that band IMO |

The black album had a lot of hits on it. IMO St. Anger was a big let down. Not trying to rain on your parade, but c'mon....you're joking right? I can name 4 titles off the black album right now, but can't remember one from St. Anger... That album made me angry |

Much like Van Halen, Metallica have become a parody unto themselves. Hang it up, already!

Black album = the beginning of the end.
Load = see album title, terrible, the end.(let's jump on the alternative bandwagon but we'll wait til it's pretty much over)
Reload = stuff that didn't make it on Load because it sucked even worse than the stuff that did make it on Load.
St. Anger = Quite possibly the worst album ever.(see above alternative comment insert Nu-metal)The only thing I can think of that was more disappointing was Star Wars Episode II. Not surprised that Chris2112 likes it though.
I really hope this album is good but look at the progression that the last four have followed. |

Their early material was extremely important on a number of levels, and much of it still sounds fresh and innovative even today. The Black Album was an obvious shift for them, but is a pretty solid album overall. I also maintain my love for The House That Jack Built, even though most of Load and ReLoad were pretty boring.
Then I finally watched Some Kind of Douche Crew. Now, my thoughts of this band can be summarized in the following equation:
Metallica = Tom Cruise
