Alex Al adds a lil flair to the bassline....like it!

Do you think better the original? Sounds like what Louis Johnson would have done.

I just watch it last night.
I didn't really like it. I'm so use to the original bass line.
But I will try to watch it again soon. Sometimes after 2 or 3 listen it sound better.

The bassist is Alex Al. I like what he did using his Music Man Stingray 5.

...anyone know why Steve Lukather was choosen to play the bass on the original?
I know he also played the guitar parts (minus Van Halen's solo & fills)...

The Alex Al version linked above is OK; it's live so yeah, it's cool.

My guess would be because he was already there and basically doubling the guitar part.

Yeah, I agree.
At that time, Lukather's guitar was also popping up on Quincy Jones' albums (e.g. The Dude).

A few years ago Quincy Jones said that if the "beat it" bassline was slapped, they could have sold a few more million copies of Thriller!

Man you can tell that was at a rehersal and that MJ didn't lip sync .

It's ok, I like the pop on the & but for the rest of the part I like original better (not a fan of the weird fill).

Holding my tongue on the guitar parts, I like the originals wayyyy better. Really think she was there because she was a girl because I've heard better players. And I'm a girl so I can say that Maybe it's just cause it was a rehersal and not a live show, although at that level you'd think they play like they play live. But I digressed.......

Loved the movie!

When I saw This Is It in theatres, I really liked the new twist that the slapping put on this bassline. I'm surprised some don't like it, but I'm really partial to slap myself.

Do you type this at the end of all of your posts? Why not just put it in your sig?
