Well, I am sure we have heard about the passing of Michael Jackson.
he may have been a wierdo, with a terrible downfall in his reputation due to his personal choices, and I am sure the press will be full of details of his precarious financial position as the estate is wound up.
However, his music did feature some fantastic bass playing on there, which I am sure will continue to be enjoyed for years to come.

not so much as a human being though.
Either way, he will be missed. |

Tough day for the talent pool. We also lost Farrah Fawcett and Sky Saxon. |

Michael was weird, by all standards, but when he was on - nobody could touch him!

His influence on culture was as profound as that of Elvis, Hendrix and the Beatles. His musical contributions equal or maybe rival those from the Beatles, Zappa, hell even Stravinsky, Copland, Wagner, Ellington, Bird, Miles, Mingus and Coltrane.
I was in junior high when Thriller came out. Like most guys in school, I hated it. We dug Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Rush and Van Halen. Iron Maiden and Judas Priest were also big. The Dead Kennedy's and Black Flag were underground favorites and the fellas raved about a new band called Metallica. Michael Jackson was considered fluff and on par with Madonna and other cream-puff MTV crap.
I was forced to hear Thriller all the time - at school pep rallies, at ball games, at gym class when the drill team girls blasted Billie Jean over and over practicing for their dance routine. Plus it was played on the radio and MTV all day, every day.
It wasn't until I became a musician, a bass player, that I began to appreciate MJ. A musician friend, a drummer I really respected, turned me on to Off The Wall. That was MJ's album right before Thriller. The songs were so cool. The rhythm section was so solid. The arrangements were so perfect. Michael's uber-soulful melodies and lyrics would get stuck in your head for months. I realized this was very heavy, cerebral music.
I know all you bass veterans know it was Louis Johnson playing bass on those MJ records and that Quincy Jones arranged all that stuff.
My hope is that all you young cats that only know MJ for his over-the-top plastic surgery, his alleged pedophilia and consequential brushes with the law will appreciate him as the musical genius he is. |

| | | | we lost one of the giants, and I doubt that we'll see someone with the same stature soon.
I fell very sad because a lot of my memories are related to some michael songs.
I remember watching "thriller" with my brother in 1982 or 83, I was a kid but I really remember it.
it's more than bass, it's music.
Music lost one of her best kid.
So long Michael Jackson, tahnk you for all the good things you brought us
RIP

You know, if you are in the spotlight from the time you are 5 years old, I think its inevitable that you will have a messed up perspective on things.
Hopefully what people remember is his talent and his music.

I kind of lost respect for him since the 90s, but I think he was a sad guy. He had no childhood, was lauched on stage at an age other children play with friends. He hadn't the chance to do so. He had no life. How could he be completely "normal" with the life he had...? I'm sad for him and his fans.

Ive seen 4 people die this week that arent famous or wealthy but have touched more lives and have done more for humanity then "HE" ever did. Yet no one knows their names or barely even cares, and there will not be a huge global mourning, even though they are the most deserving of one, not some pop star pedophile! In my opinion! Too bad for his family though. |

| | | | I dunno about you guys, but if anyone ever harmed my child, no volume of monetary compensation could ever justify the situation. Sounds to me like Michael had been set up.
Regardless of all that garbage, Michael will be sorely missed. I was watching the video for "Beat It" earlier, and the coupling of Jackson's singing and dancing with Van Halen's playing could bring a man to tears. RIP Michael, we'll always love you. |

| | | | There are rumors, allegations and "crap talk" , as it seems to often be referred to on this forum.
Then there is the only thing that we collectively know.
THE MUSIC.
Why not keep it at talking about what we actually know... |

his passing is a great loss to the musical community, and well for all the wrong he may or may not have done, he tried to help people in ways only he could.
