Have always like the tone on this song, I know he uses an accoustic electric bass on the song but I was wondering if there is anyway to approximate the sound on this song on an electric bass , it is bright and clear but not harsh at all ,

amazing song. its one of my warmups. one of my favorite basslines ever.

not sure about the tone though. the album was supposed to be a demo and wasnt meant to be released, but it was too good.

I suppose a high end piezo system, or mix it with a magnetic pickup?

i use a chorus to emulate that tone. neck pickup, roll off some treble and use my cheapo chorus. best clean sound if ever gotten.

Flatten your EQ, put on fresh strings, and grab a pick. Play with where you're picking (should be down toward the bridge pickup), play with the mids and highs on your EQ, and play with your pickup balance. You should be able to get a close approximation without much tweaking.

Edit: Just gave it another listen, to really get that tone you'd need a piezo pickup you could blend into your electric and a light chorus. There might be a touch of reverb too. If he really was playing an acoustic-electric, it sounds like the engineer may have taken a direct out and mic'd the bass which would account for the reverb. It sounds like a very close reverb like you'd get sitting in an iso or guitar booth at a studio.

Does anyone think it sounds as if he's using pretty light strings?

It's tuned down 1/2 step, that could account for the lighter soundng strings.

he uses a warwick streamer, dean markley blue steels (heavy) tuned half step down from E, and uses an Ampeg SVT head and cabinet. he plays near the bridge, with a 1.0 mm pick

hopefully that should tell you how he gets his sound, i can achieve that tone with Prosteels on my Squier VM jazz and my marshall 60 watt tube amp
