Mike Watt - The Secondman's Middle Stand

Just got a copy of Watt's weird masterpiece, detailing a month-long illness, hospitalization and recovery in song. Very bizzare, wonderful music. Conjures up Beefheart, Zappa and Coltrane freak out stuff.

I've had the pleasure to interview Mike for an hour a year or so ago and he is the real deal. He loves music and works hard to make it authentic and original.

The Bass on this album is very melodic and heavy. I love it.

Watt keeps it really real. In the small amount of time I met him after watching him perform, I could tell he was very authentic, even after all these years.

Great album.

Secondman's Middle Stand is alright, I think my problem is that I saw him perform some of those songs a year or so before the album came out. After hearing them live, the songs on the album sound dead and dull, I was disappointed, but I guess it testifies to how incredible it is to see Watt live.

Check out the Minutemen documentary, "We Jam Econo", it's a great film with some awesome early Minutemen performance footages (opening for the Meat Puppets, playing for public access, etc.)
