Miles Davis' 'Nardis' - live hip-hop jazz version

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello

I wanted to share another live tune from band Big Fan doing our version of Miles Davis' great tune 'Nardis' - we took a funky hip-hop groove aproach to it but it really works well - plus our drummer Sophie Alloway plays the most killing laid back groove - we all solo (sax, guitar, bass) - so have a listen and tell me what you think.

Nardis - by Big Fan

Nice! I enjoyed the feel of the arrangement, and also liked your solo quite a bit.

Hey Mike sounds good, nice blow too...for some reason that is a tune alot of people like to blow over but few blow well over. I think there are a few ways (scalar) to make the A section a little easier and beat the avoid notes but as always it comes down to voice leading and chord tones. You do a good job and play fast as hell to boot, nice work!!!

Very cool Mike, But then I've grown to expect it. When is the tour coming to Detroit?

Cheers guys and thanks Wil, this is actually a great example of me playing a solo over something for the first time - we did rehearse this so it sounds tight-ish but I wasn't expecting to get a solo, hence the slight pause after the guitar solo - I didn't actually want to play one, but that's the beauty of a jazz gig, as in you don't always have a choice! My solo is based on the changes (obviously) but I was using my ear and trying to play melodically as opposed to getting caught up in any theory BS - anyway it sounds cool overall and I love this feel for Nardis.

As for a tour...man, we need some more gigs here first!

I'm really hoping to get writing some new music soon for a potential album sometime next year - these things just take so much time...thanks again for the encouraging words.

LOL, way to keep it real Mike!!! I agree that it's easy to let your brain get in the way of itself and much better to let the music come out...on stage anyway. Of course, you do enough practicing to make that happen.

I think Mike Stern was the first guy to record Nardis with a real heavy rock feel, but I can't remember what record it's on.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever heard a Miles version of this tune...only BE Trio versions. I will have to look for one on ITunes.

the general consensus(sp?) is that Bill actually wrote nardis and blue in green but for some reason miles got credit for them. Its hard to deny, both songs have so much bill and so little miles in them in comparison to both's many other compositions.
