Mixing help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Guys my band is mixing our second album. We home recorded all tracks and are in the middle of mixing the tracks. We are looking for some feedback on the mixes. WE ARE NOT INTRESTED IN PREFORMANCE FEEDBACK!!!!! We only want your sonic feedback. what in the mix is working and what would you say would make the mix better.
Thanks for the time!!!!

Amazed: The guitar tone doesn't suit the chorus, it sounds quite tight on the verses though. When the second guitar comes in for the solo, it occupies the same frequencies as the first guitar. The cymbals are very quite but that is modern convention and the snare could be more powerful. The overall mix sounds compressed, I'd stay away from that.

On Your Way: the snare and bass guitar seem more pronounced when you can hear them but because the overall track is compressed and the guitar and kick drum are too loud, they get lost in the loud sections of the song

Give: Better mix of the bass guitar on this one. Same issue of compression on the mix though

Overall thoughts: remove some low mids from the bass to clean it up, bring the snare and cymbals up, compress the overall track less (or maybe not at all).

On Amazed the guitar is a bit too out front it's competing with the vocals and overpowers the lead part at the end. Pan it to a side some or pad it down 3-6db. The bass is not as distinct as it should be adding a bit of hi end and cutting low mids will help. I agree with animvl that over all it is too compressed sounding.

I feel that the Compressed sound is a little much. but seems that every place we went to tour to record just squishes the crap out of the tracks. We have done some work on the low mids I just don't have thoses misex converted yet but yes I agree the bass is a little muddy. We are also trying to run the snare through a diffrent bus to see if we can't "meat it up" But thanks for the feed back guys really does help!

I'd have to agree with the above comments. Also EVERYTHING IS LOUD AND THERE IS NO ROOM FOR DYNAMICS. THE FIRST THING I WANTED TO DO WAS TURN IT DOWN BUT THERE WAS NOWHERE TO GO SINCE IT WAS RECORDED SO HOT.

I'm just picking with you with the all caps thing.

Every song is just a brick wall of sound. I know Foo Fighters do this all the time but it still bugs me.

Cool material, though. I like what you're doing but my ears are tired halfway through the song.

Hey, thanks for taking my comments in the spirit they were given!

That's funny you were looking for a Foo Fighters sound. You nailed it!

I love Foo Fighters, by the way.

so much sub bass/bass :O turn that down. its giving me a bit of ear fatigue at the moment. Your stereo opportunities aren't being used enough. Have some panning. Even automate the panning if the panning can't be symmetrical all the way through. Too much compression on the master and the individual tracks. Needs alot more release. Your also not utilizing your ability to automate faders enough to add more depth to the songs.

To sum up: everything is too busy/in your face which has left it sounding weak and cheap instead of the obvious intention of the compression/loudness.

Definite potential with every track and with a nice mix they could all be hits. the playing and singing is great!
