Modern classical?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,

I've been enjoying lots of new music lately, but one thing that has me curious is modern classical, but the problem is that I can't seem to find much of it.

Is there anybody writing classical music today but utilizing modern instruments (electric bass and guitar, synthesizers, etc.)? Or does it simply not exist?

Here's some good "starter" stuff:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor would interest you if you haven't listened to them... the quintisential post-rock group

GYBE - Moya

Aphex Twin - Drugks is an amazing "IDM" album that really has more in common with some sort of classical/soundscape and experimental "noise" type stuff than anything even remotely "dance-y".

Aphex Twin - Jynweythek

Phillip Glass for odd repetitive minimalism

Philip Glass Ensemble "Train/Spaceship" part 2

Steve Reich tends to use a lot of percussive elements

Steve Reich - Music for pieces of wood

I will be following this topic closely. I've got a few partially writtne pieces that I think would qualify. Unfortunately, nothing is recorded, YET.

Most modern classical composers are using traditional classical instruments. The Wikipedia article on contemporary classical music might be a good place to start learning names.

there's some stuff i know with traces of classical style in it, like Avishai Cohen Trio or Esbjorn Svensson Trio. Both are rooted in jazz, but you can definately hear the classical influence.
