Modern Heavy Band w/o Screaming?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys!

I'm getting more and more into emo/screamo music...Rise Against, Bullet for my Valentine, Atreyu, Alexisonfire, etc. and I'm looking to get a band together to write originals, the music would be inspired by bands like these. But I'm still a little iffy on screaming. I wouldn't be the screamer, as I don't feel like throwing away my voice, so that's not the issue. I just feel that we'd get a much larger fan base/airtime on radio/overall appreciation to the music if there wasn't screamo. I'm also still borderline on if I like screamo or not, some bands I can take, others I just hate. So that brings me to the question, do you guys know of any modern emo/metal bands that don't scream? I know that you can sing during the lighter parts but I have yet to hear a modern metal/hard rock band/emo band that uses only singing, not half-half or fullout screamo, and thus I'd liek to see how it'd work with only singing, even during heavier parts to the songs (if that makes sense). If you guys could name some bands, (or songs) that do this that'd be great!

Thanks guys!
Justin

I can't really think of any.

I'd also like to add, that it is possible to scream without damaging your voice. (I'm not saying that some people don't though)

Look up some online vocal lessons

Well a lot of people say it's possible but I think it still has to do SOME damage.

I should add that I'm learning classical singing, and im bad enough without adding anything thats notorious for hurting your voice

Don't know too many metal bands without screaming, but one popped in my head (they didn't do screaming in their newest CD): Trivium. Check out that CD for non-screaming metal ideas.

+1 That's a good example of metal that works really well with clean vocals.

The only other examples I can think of off the top of my head would be Candlemass and Dream Theater. But that might not be the kind of metal that you're looking for.

Yeah, I mainly thought of Dream Theater because of the vocals.

But still I second the idea to check out Nevermore, in fact, here are the videos for their songs "The Final Product." and "I, Voyager."

I don't know how new is new but I posted a similar thread about 6 months ago as I like the new music coming out but hate the screaming vocals, anyhow after a tone of recommendations and 95% still involved screaming 2 bands caught my attention. Iced Earth is like a modern spin on Iron Maiden and Devon Townsend had some interesting stuff on myspace. Don't know if this helped any, hope it did.

the newest avenged sevenfold doesn't have much screaming. screaming did some damage to the guys voice. this band is tight tight tight. cool stuff.

i'm with you on the whole scream scene. i like a lot of the bands music but the cookie monster vocals get old. mastodon is the only band i can listen to consistently that screams cuz i think musically they are so amazing.

try checking out Saosin - theyre not the defenition of HEAVY, but they are like hard rock, and their singer has the voice of an angel. Plus, they have an amazing drummer lol.

edit: heres the myspace link, http://www.myspace.com/saosin

Hope this helps.

+1000 to the new trivium. I'd say its my favorite album of the milenium. Also, the last Megadeth album, the system has failed is really good, beats up on Metallica's latest work

UH, really, theres MILLIONS of metalbands with clean vocals. Iron Maiden, Nocturnal Rites, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Hammerfall, Manowar, Megadeth just to name a few. But theres a big difference between emo and metal.
