Since "bass line/riff" could refer to any genre of music from any era, I ask that you keep your replies within the "bass guitar" era (circa 1950 on...)

My vote would either be that one, Queen's "Under Pressure," or Rick James' "Superfreak" because those three were not only huge songs, but they were all sampled in later huge pop songs. But really, there's tons of really, really memorable bass riffs. |

Don't want to come over as a Jam obsessive  but Town Called Malice is definatley worth a mention too, particularly for us english, it is pretty much a rip of Cant Hurry Love though
