Hey

I am trying to start listening to some Motown because my bass teacher was talking about James Jamerson today, and his incredible bass work. Can anyone recommend any good songs to start?

Add "Standing in the Shadows of Love", "What's Going On", "How Long has that Evening Train Been Gone", and "Roadrunner" and you'll have one hell of a primer.

Get the box set called Hitsville USA The Motown Singles Collection 1959-1971. Some people call this collection James Jamerson's Greatest Hits!

I think that there's something to be learned from any Motown song... take your pick! If the entirre bassline of a song doesn't grab you, you're bound to find a lick or two that, when you learn them, will go a long way toward molding you into the bassist that you can become with practice and perseverance. Frankly, I think there's something to be learned from most music.
