Mountain: cool or lame?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just came across a live version of Nantucket Sleighride on Pandora.com. It sounds vaguely familiar, but I liked it...somewhat.

So my question to you guys, Mountain: lame or cool?

One of the coolest three pieces ever. I feel sorry for anyone who thinks Moutain is "lame."

While I havn't heard everything from them, I think that Mountain rocked, they got one of the best rock songs of all time in Mississippi Queen.

Pappalardi was a good bassist and producer.

They rock, Rock, and then ROCK some more!!! I love Mountain! Not only are they one of the heaviest power trios of all time, but Felix Pappalardi is a pretty important figure in the bass world. If you're not sure why, ask Jack Bruce.

They were surprisingly heavy for their time, it caught me off guard.

Mountain

Mountain was a killer band; Felix Pappalardi was also a great songwriter, he and Jack Bruce did a lot of stuff together.

I always liked Mountain.
On a purely selfish note, Leslie West was one of the first guitarist to use Les Paul Jrs which helps the resale value of my '61.

I don't like or dislike them. I don't own any of their records and am only familiar with their "hits".
I acknowledge and respect their past accomplishments.
However, that being said, I recently played on a bill with them here in Phoenix and I thought their live performance was mediocre at best and I'm being kind. I will say I thought Leslie's voice sounded nice and soulful on a couple of the tunes. The bass player was completely forgettable.

mind blowing

I knew they were great but when I saw them live in '69 they blew my mind. Wow! My favorite "Theme For An Imaginary Western." Listening to it right now it sounds like a Cream ballad. Power trios still sound huge.

Mountain did have a 4th member...Steven Knight on keyboards. I'm not surprised that he's forgotten.

I never heard them live...I'm assuming they would be quite loud.
I had Flowers Of Evil & Live...always dug "Crossroader"(live version) & "Mississippi Queen".

...also dug West, Bruce, & Laing.

Quite loud

Felix would use three Sunn 200s heads with six 200s cabs that's 12 JBL D140s. Set up with three cabs set up in an arc like a bay window the heads on each then a cab on each head with the wheels dangleing. The center head was a Master for the others. Leslie West had the same with the guitar version Sunn 100s. Oh yeah Loud. A kind of pleasing mud bass. Theme For An Imaginary Western live at Woodstock is on the Woodstock II album. Heard it there myself. Whoa. Felix produced much of the Cream stuff and is responsible with Jack for the cello and other string parts. Give them their due!

I was a huge fan in the 70's....I FINALLY got to see them (minus Felix.....) twice last year! The music was great...but Leslie West was one cranky old fart, both times! WOW!!!
Corky sat with us and signed autographs, drank beer....Lesie does his thing, refuses to talk to anyone and is out on the dodge...it was very disappointing after having waited sooo many years....oh well the music was still great
