I hope this is not considered spam.. and I was not sure if I should post here or in Recordings but...
Well, folks- people have wanted clips of the new F bass... all I can say is be careful what you ask for, this tune is about 11 minutes long !
it is a version of Herbie Hancock's " Dolphin Dance " - a favorite of mine.
I dusted off my protools digi001 and threw 3 cheapo mics on the drums. Keyboards went straight in and I recorded audio AND midi so i was later able to change the keyboard sounds. The bass went straight in with a little post eq'ing... but we went for a live sound- Everythiing was played live as a trio and there are no overdubs or punches ( as you will probably be able to tell !! )
I think it came out pretty good considering we did 4 tunes in one afternoon- no arrangement, we just went for it and followed each other around to see where we would go. Credits are as follow..
Drums- Jim Buck ( also a smokin guitarist! )
Keys - Ricardo " Cocho" Arbe
Bass- Adrian Garcia ( me! )

Cheers | the keyboard sounds came from my Korg Karma-
when i recorded audio, we used a patch called atpiano ( after touch )- but it ended up sounding a bit dry, so, since i also recorded midi- i later
brought the atpiano part down and added a combination with a nice rhodes type sound and an underlying pad called "ravelian" i believe. Adjusted the reverb a bit, and in my opinion, it sounded much better. Sexier, i guess. It recalls the days of Herbie or Chick on electric piano. Cocho, who played the keys, is just a dear, dear friend and a wonderful musician.. a lot of where we went in the tune was "suggested" by his playing, and also Jim's drumming. I was happy to follow. |

| | | | Well besides your absolutely sick bass tone the keys sound just perfect in the mix. Was bass & keys directly into 001 or thru something else like a mixer. I use 001 with RME ADI-8 and it's night & day difference.
Cheers |

Cheers | thanks, man! you see, i am so phobic about mixing. I am by no means an engineer, i just follow my beat up ears ( which hear very little hi end on the right side )
no mixer, straight in in the most primitive way imaginable- the bass went thru one of the 1/4 in inputs, so no mic pre either. I used Channel Strip to condition the tone a little- i am not familiar with the RME - i am in the dark ages with that stuff.. |
