mp3 player for transcribing

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello everybody, I need some advice on buying a portable mp3 player that I will use (apart from just listening) a lot for transcribing. I don't really care about stuff like amount of memory and video/pics, two things are most important for me:

Quality of sound at a low volume level and
(most important) a good rewind button.

I hate it when I want to go back 1 second to listen to that chord for the 100th x and pressing the rewind button too short takes you to the previous song. So an extra button for rewind (that doesn't do previous track stuff) or a touch screen with a scroll bar (like windows media player) would be very good for me. Unfortunately these things never get mentioned in reviews (it almost seems as if the general public never does any transcribing!). All suggestions are welcome! Thanks in advance.

You might want to check out the Boss Micro BR which was just released. It'll do the speed up / slow down without changing pitch thing with MP3 files and doubles as a portable (pocket sized) 4 track recorder that also plays mp3 files.

It seems to be too new to be available anywhere yet so I can't answer your audio quality question. Also, since it works using memory cards it won't have 20GB+ of music storage.

Thanks for the replies, but the Boss Micro BR seems a bit too much of a "gear" thing, having many functions I won't use. Anybody know a "normal" mp3 player with the functions I listed above?

Yea, I debated about posting the Micro BR but it looks so cool I thought I'd mention it.

I have an older iPod and one setting allows you to use the wheel to FF/REW through a song instead of affecting volume. You could always try one out at the store to see if that's what you need. This function won't accidentally move you to another song either.

iPod is still the best one out there, and you can tap the center button and scroll to any point in the song at any time during play back. i love mine, it s great for going back and listening again, i use it to learn RHCP nad Jaco tunes.

i have a ipod nano knockoff called a supertalent megascreen. seriously...
it has an a/b function where you set the point at a, then hit the button at b, and it will loop that section of music. 90 bucks for a 2 gig player (also records to mp3).

Ok, the ipod scrollwheel sounds just like what I need then. I suspected it could do this, but nowhere (not even on the apple site) did they explain what you could do with it! Thanks very much for the advice .

i like my "creative nomad" i have the jukebox 30G simple, solid and easy to use....i practice with it all the time, has a nice line out can easily be hooked up to other sources and the rewind function works easily.
