I was watching a PBS show (yes, their in their money drive at the moment) and started watching Celtic Woman, A New Journey. It's a live show, recorded at Slane Castle near Dublin Ireland, of Celtic music sung by 5 increadibly talented women singers. There's a full orchestra, but while watching, I saw a bass player and he was playing a 5 string MTD.
Anyway, if you are interested in hearing it on that show, or like Celtic music, check your local public television station for when it airs.

In and of itself, this wouldn't really bother me so much, but the fact that they boast about being able to enjoy "this kind of programming" kind of annoys me because you can only enjoy "that kind of programming" when said programming is being interrupted every 10 minutes by begging.
On another, related note, some of those Celtic chicks are rather easy on the eyes...

However, I believe that my favorite person would have to be Mairead Nesbitt, who plays that violin while dancing around. Major talent, and beauty as well.
But, I DO have to agree with Planet Boulder. They really DO seem to play good stuff like this during pledge drives. And the interuptions are quite annoying. Plus they keep saying same thing over and over again, in a different way. If you're going to give, you're going to give regardless of their pleads. Some may even become annoyed enough to not give because of the constant hounding. Anyway, at some point, I MAY just go buy the DVD of it from Amazon.com or someplace like that. |

| | | Wow.... OK, I have to say it... that stuff is horrible.
I caught about 2 minutes of that show and felt like killing myself. The female group version of Yanni.... definitely created by a bunch of corporate guys/gals figuring out how to take old white people's money (and I'm an old corporate white guy!)
Sorry... they were singing Danny Boy on the short segment I saw (Celtic!?!?!?!?!?)... just wretched.
As with virtually any professional show, I'm sure the backing musician's are very good, but man, that's about as soul-less and lifeless and 'corporate' as anything I'm ever seen..

In my opinion, you missed the best parts of the show, muscially. Perhaps you should give it another try?
Of course, if it just isn't your type of music, then that's different. Take me, for example. Anytime I see a guy singing on a rock video and he's dancing around, or bobbin' his head, or countless other moves they do, . . . . . . well, I don't feel like killing myself, but I DO feel like laughing and turning the channel.

They did a note-perfect cover of Enya's "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)" -- almost too perfect, like it wasn't even live. The sound mix was so compressed. And even ignoring the PBS pledge thing, the "Celtic Woman" show just seemed like an attempt to milk more money from "Riverdance" fans.

They rarely focus very long on Bass players. If Mairead was playing the bass, I'm sure I would even be able to tell which exact model it was, type of wood, maybe even see the signatures on the head!!
Anyway, I enjoyed it for the music, as I do like the modernized version of celtic music, . . . .and as I said already, Mairead's prancing and playing. I've always thought she was an excellent musician since I saw her on *cough* Michael Flatley's "Lord of the Dance". There's an arrogant guy!! But I digress. Mairead is fun to watch. |

If you want REAL Celtic music, go get yourself some Clannad, Capercaillie, Dervish, Silly Wizard, Tannahill Weavers, Battlefield Band (Davy Steele albums only, and maybe Across the Borders), etc etc.
By the way Kjung, I am a HUGE Yanni fan.
Nope, not kidding. |

I enjoy the (most likely studio fixed) voices of the ladies, the composition of the songs, and (of course), Mairead! I won't hide with those comments either, but will hop up and down flailing my arms and legs.
BTW, after watching it last night, I'm now certain that the bass player IS using an MTD. |

Some of those girls are definitely pleasant to look at... especially Chloe Agnew!!! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
