mudvayne - Ld50 bass sound

Just a quick one because I know Ryan's tone has been covered A LOT on here. I know he doesn't use any effects but a fellow bass playing friend told me a lot of his weirder sounds is a fretted and fretless bass playing at the same time. Has anyone ever tried this or know if its true?

thanks

i'm not sure, dude...i've heard that he plays a fretless pedulla, but i don't how much truth there is to that...his technique has a lot to do with it, but i'm sure you've heard that one before...his setup plays another part...couple the low string tension and raised action with his technique plus his warwick/ampeg rig and you've got it...i'm not sure how he eq's his rig, but you also have to realize that some of his sound comes from the DI he uses in the studio (and maybe live?), an avalon U5...honestly, in the studio recordings, you're probably hearing a lot more of a warwick + avalon sound with maybe 15%-20% of his sound even coming from his ampeg...i've heard of small delays in recording to help thicken up the sound, as my band does the same thing, but i've never heard of ryan martinie using a doubled fretless to add an effect to his sound...hope my rambling helped, bro

Yes, Ryan has used fretless Pedulla basses. However, I've enver heard of him doubling up the basses like that.

i never knew a DI could play such a big part in your tone? also wouldnt high action just make the bass harder to play?

well, he uses standard guage strings and detunes them, so no, not really...i would imagine that higher action makes his aggressive technique sound cleaner, i.e., not banging the strings against the fretboard...anything you throw in your path is going to affect your tone...remember the avalon is a DI, but a lot more, too...it's a really flexible unit, and many guys use them as a preamp
