Murray Vishnu & his Orchestra

I'm reading a book about the Mahavishnu Orchestra and after all these years I didn't know Tony Levin was McLaughlin's first choice for bassist. Tony said his mother-in-law told him some guy Murray Vishnu called about a gig....it makes me laugh every time I think of it. As much as I always thought Rick Laird was a perfect fit for that band, I think Tony would have been awesome too. Maybe if they do a reunion, and Laird isn't into it.

You do know that Tony Levin can be a bit of a joker.... ?

But it's a Mahavishnu Orchestra book... not a Tony Levin book. But it's still probably a Levin joke. I'd love to hear TL with the Mahavishnu Orchestra... I think he'd be a better fit personally. Rick Laird kept things a little too simple if you ask me.

From our very own Smash in his interview on TalkBass :

"In his book "Beyond The Bass Clef", Tony Levin tells an amusing anecdote of missing a chance to join Mahavishnu Orchestra due to being out of the house when the call came and Tony's parents mistakenly relayed the message from John McLaughlin as being from "Murray Vishnu and his orchestra".

I've had that book for many years and basically it a series of funny stories - whic you may or may not believe!!

Laird has been a photogrpaher for the over 20 years. I don't think music is his calling these days. However, there was a certain Mr Hellborg who'd get first choice if a reunion ever came about.
