Is music getting worse, or am I getting old?

Sign in to disble this ad
DISCLAIMER- I just noticed a thread in the sticky area that says please reconsider posting new threads about modern music... my bad!! Lets just say this post is about getting old My bad....

So, Im in my mid 30s... and I have to ask... and see if anyone else feels like me..

Why does music now (whether it be country, rock, or pop) pale in comparison to the "old stuff"?

Lets examine todays's pop music first. Today we have Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Justin Beiber, Kesha, Daughtry, and Justin Timberlake.

Take a look back at the 60s (Marvin Gaye, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones), the 70s (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Eagles), the 80s (Michael Jackson, Madonna, Guns N Roses), the 90s (Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Aerosmith (although they could fall under 70s or 80s as well), Sheryl Crow, Oasis)...

Do you get my drift? Nothing good or memorable is being released these days. Ok, sure... all the acts I named up from the 00s and 10s are pop acts, but Ive gone and given bands like Band of Horses a chance... Arade Fire... and while they are better than Justin Beiber or Lady Gaga, they just dont hold a candle to the old stuff either. Wilco either. They were cool back in the 90s.. ironically.

Music getting worse or you getting older? The two need not be mutually exclusive.

Lady Gaga is awesome, Katy Perry is hot and kinda awesome, Justin Beiber is the teenie-pop flavor of the week, Kesha is kinda awesome, Daughtry isn't anything special though the guy has a quite voice, and Justin Timberlake is awesome a producer and kinda awesome as an artist.

If you can't find current good music to listen to you're not looking hard enough.

"Nothing good or memorable is being released these days."

Wow. Talk about generalizations. Let's discuss this topic for the ten millionth time.

The music industry has fundamentally changed. Radio is no longer the only way artists can get exposure.

Just dig a little deeper and you will find more good music being played than at any other time in history.

Consequently, the ease with which musicians can make and share music also means that there will be a lot of "bad" music out there, as well.

Just have to do some searching.

There's plenty of good stuff, but it's quite obscure.

I think the interesting thing here is the bands you listed as good--if you are looking for bands that sound like anything from the beatles to madonna to Marvin Gaye to Nirvana, you are really casting a wide net on what you would consider "good" music.

I respect your opinion, sir... but cannot disagree more.

The stuff on iTunes, the top 10 specifically is crap. I looked today. The only artists that I recognized and could be interested were the Country crossover acts. That from a guy who does not like Country.

I've wondered the same thing myself and have come to the following conclusion: both. The record industry has changed a lot in the last fifteen-to-twenty years and the music typically heard on commercial radio in many ways reflects that change.

can you ask a less subjective question?

good music is good music--the people you listed as not liking are considered good by millions of people

your radio is the problem--change the station!

i'm of similar age, and there is so much great music around these days it's silly--it just doesn't all get the attention and promotion you might expect, in part because people are finding it anyway

But that's part of the issue - in the "good old days" () you didn't need to look very hard.

I think the problem is where you are looking for the good music, I have never heard any song from Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake etc. There are many musicians doing great music, a good example is John Mayer, Cake is also a great band, Beck still doing good music, last weekend I found few new good bands (new for me): Aloe Blacc, Breakestra, Maroon 5....

Yes, but millions of people also can't name the Vice President or Speaker of the House.... ever seen a Leno street interview?

There is some decent music out there, but none of it is as great as the song the OP gets his username from.
