Must own reggae albums/bands

Im a huge reggae fan, and I love playing it as well, but i know theres a whole lot of stuff out there ive yet to hear that i really should hear, in order to call myself a true lover of reggae music. I really love the bass heavy tones of early marley like midnight ravers and all day all night, them belly full etc. So i was wondering if anyone is willing to recommend some albums for me to extend my musical appreciation of this fine music. I have pretty much all of marleys releases, some third world, a little bit of peter tosh and katchafire (not sure how well known they are outside of new zealand, but if you can get hold of them, their bassist is SUPREMELY good). Any recommendations are good, but like i said, my favourite reggae is the bass driven, threatening, heavy style reggae.thanks

I wouldn't call it heavy, but I would recommend Soja. Check out http://www.myspace.com/soja or http://sojamusic.com/soja/

Black Uhuru, or just plain anything with Robbie Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar on it. Those guys are one of the all-time best rhythm sections in any style of music.

For bass playing' 'babylon by bus' is really good, the Barrett brothers are just awesome on this (can't say the same for Junior Murvin's hammy guitar solos LOL). BM's best work for me is on his first three island LPs (catch a fire, burning, natty dread) or the Lee Perry versions of the same songs recorded a bit earlier.

For dub reggae look out for King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, and of course Lee Perry / Upsetters.

Reggae was never an 'albums' thing really, it's all about singles. There are lots of good box sets on the trojan label that cover different styles depending on what you are interested in - look up 'trojan box set' on amazon to get an idea of what's out there.

A truly great album, it's really uplifting. (Which is a good effort considering the "troubled" nature of the subject matter!)

Thanks for the tip on the Trojan box sets. There seems to be some real gems there. I just ordered the Ska Box Set I, and Ska Revival Box Set. I am looking forward to hearing them.

If you like ska then try The Planet Smashers. The Mighty and Unstoppable are great ska albums. Also Hepcat is really good ska.

Not heavy, but my favorite reggae artist has always been Toots Hibbert.

Toots and the Maytals get about as much play in my house as Otis Redding, Led Zeppelin or The White Stripes.

Trojan

Look up the Trojan Reggae Compilations. There are a bunch of them, and each compilation has 50 songs. They are sorted into different types of reggae too. I own vol. 1 and 2 of the Dub box sets and they're awesome.

I just bought the Motor City Box Set. Wow, what a great collection! I have a couple of Ska box sets coming. I am really looking forward to them now. I am thinking of collecting them all. Any ones that I should avoid?
