I picked up the electric bass 2.5 years ago to help co-form a band because I had always wanted to play live rock music.
I have learned SO much from reading talkbass, from theory, to practice routines, to bassists and albums to listen to, to finding an instructor in St Louis, to books, to setups, band management, what equipment i need to play live.... and I bought the pedals and bass I play now on talkbass.
I played a stock MIM P bass (I'm playing a MIJ P now) with Fat Beams through a Sansamp on all of the songs. We recorded with a guy I REALLY respect : Brad Booker (bookermusic.com)
I'm really proud of this moment and I thought I would share this because I owe a thank you to the talkbass community for all of the good knowledge i've picked up along the way.

Still haven't heard the songs (no itunes on this computer), but I'll as soon as I can.
Take care!

Just grabbed the album (EP?) off eMusic.

I liked your band then, and still like it now! I agree - you have a solid playing for just 2.5 years of practice. The studio versions are very good (I knew Smile from its live version, in your old myspace).
The most annoying thing: Amazon, iTunes and eMusic won't sell their mp3s to my country (does anyone know why or have the same probelm? This is so weird...). Another reason I like Bandcamp... I don't think they have this kind of issue...
Take care!

I did listen to it twice and liked it quite a bit (if that doesn't sound like a lot, you should see how much other new stuff I have yet to listen to at all...). It's a lot more straightforward than the music I usually listen to, so I guess you must be doing something right when I'm just playing the EP for a third time. The singer sounds cool (particularly on the more aggressive sections) and your bass parts are just right for these songs!

Thank you for the compliment on the bass. I was probably overly conscious on trying not to overplay. On two songs (And Failing, Paradise) the engineer separated out my fret clack/noise and bumped them way up to sound more aggressive. I had a hard time with that. The first time I heard the mixes I was convinced that I was a much more sloppy bass player than i remembered. It wasn't until he showed me what he did that I relaxed and realized that i wasn't as sloppy as i thought. We ended up bumping them back down a little, but it's still very present. |
