My band's first recordings

Sign in to disble this ad
A few months ago this band I have been playing in put together a couple of tracks that we could send out to venues. I'm not super happy about my playing in the for a few reasons (I hadn't been playing with them long, I had never tracked in a non-live setting before), so I wanted to wait before I submitted myself to the mercy of TalkBass. But, it turns out, we really lucked out on some time at a really nice studio within the next couple of weeks so we are trying to get in there and get a whole album together.
I was wondering if you all could take a quick listen and please give me any feedback you care to give. I have played classical trumpet for years so my only concern had been whether I performed exactly what the composer/director wanted me to, but this new concept of playing bass in a band where I have to sculpt a line and not only worry about playing it right, but worry about if it does for the song exactly what I imagined it to is very overwhelming to me. At the time I recorded these, I was really worried about cluttering up the sound too much so I played the groove as basic as I could, but now that I listen to them I think they might sound a bit bland and that I maybe could stand to move around a bit more?
I have no idea what I'm doing.

The Austerman File

Thanks for the listen.

Sounds good, although the mix sounds bad in some aspects (guitar too loud and whole track over compressed for example). Your playing suits the music well, you don't need to worry about sounding bland (it's far better to keep it simple than to overcomplicate, but you obviously know this already). If you do feel this is too simple, there is plenty of time to rewrite and maybe rerecord in the future.

Knowing Where I'm going is my favourite of the two tracks. You gel well together musically and sound like there is lots of musical ability between the 3 of you. Maybe you could look for that fourth guy to play the second guitar and keys you've recorded? it all sounds pretty important to the overall sound on the recordings.

Thanks animvl for your time. I really appreciate it.
Yeah we are looking for a keys player (we have a beautiful old Rhodes just collecting dust) but it is slow in materializing and only getting harder as we all adjust to the three piece dynamic.
Thanks again for the help!

Cheers

mother mary is real nice--it's more difficult than many realize to play a real slow tempo blues like that.

loving mother mary. i feel the bass really suits the song well, and even makes the song as great as it is. perhaps we can play a show together some time. we're hoping to tour soon.
