My Benavente 6 string videos

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok so I've saved and saved and Finally got a Benavente 6 string. now that i've had it for a few months i've incorporated it into just about all my bands songs and can't even think about going back to a 4... its just too much fun having the extended range. I tune mine EADGBE... so 2 extra high strings instead of a low B and a high C or hoe ever the usual is.

here's a pic.

Here's a song where i do some bar chords and such, making use of all 6 strings. and a bass solo at the end.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdvBBJSjvgw

Here's a song i wrote. some pretty good 2 hand tapping throughout. also the midsection has me triplet picking about as fast as i possibly can haha. skip the first 20 seconds, forgot to cut that off =p

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWZ6h206vJo

And last but not least, a cover of Bite the Pain, by Death. at this point they had a Pick bassist, but I covered it fingerstyle just the same =)

Enjoy! any critiques and comments are encouraged.

Kudos for going with the six and the unusual tuning and congrats on saving up for and buying a great bass. It just isn't as cool when it's handed to you.

In terms of the vids: I really can't hear anything except the guitar leads and the kick drum. For that type of music you really need to have a decent recording and mix if you want others to offer advice/constructive criticism. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I have noticed that on some sets of speakers you can't hear what I'm doing, and others you can hear everything perfectly. more so on a good pair of headphones.

We will be making some much better recordings very soon, once we buy a few more drum mics. also my over all tone will be better because in those videos I was playing through a borrowed Behringer head, whereas now I have in vested in a Markbass 500w 1x12 cab which i LOVE!

Hey i responded above but then I remembered I had another link where you could hear what I'm doing a lot more.

if you go to myspace.com/jasonmastersmusic I have some pretty great quality audio only recordings where you can hear the use of my higher register tuned strings

the songs "Down Deep" and "Sleepwalking" are multiple layers of bass only.

lemme know what you think!

great musicianship. I can't really say anything negative about the playing whatsoever. maybe try to be more interesting in regards to your performance though, I didn't feel like your demeanors matched the music. I know that's a silly thing to say considering how great you guys sound, but that kind of thing matters a lot to "normal" people who go to a show. If you looked like you thought what you were playing was as awesome as you know it is it would make for a much more entertaining performance. Y'know? I mean, how is the audience supposed to be into it if you look bored on stage?

haha ya about that... its very funny to me that after only playing together for about 3 months we can have over an hour set of music, and execute them relatively well, but our biggest problem has been coming up with a band name and being able to look like were rocking out... these are generally the FIRST things a band can get good at...

I do generally tend to get a bit more into the music when were playing live since there is a crowd and i usually have a few shots in me, but this time i was just concentrating on my playing because we were recording and i was pretty stoned =p

cool. I wasn't trying to be negative btw, you guys are awesome and I would personally really dig your set if I was there. I'm just trying to be constructive.

p.s. my own band had a MAJOR problem of "looking the part" before I joined, and one of the caveats was that I wasn't going to play in a band that looked bored on stage. I told them right up front "if you guys are just gonna stand around like you're in line at the DMV I'm not really interested." Let's just say it's improving.

Very nice buy. If I might suggest so, I might would try to tune it EADGCF, which is strait fourths. It'll make you try to find some alternate voicings for those bar chords, but linear playing will be much simpler. On the bright side, bar chords can be a little redundant, so just sticking to 1-3-5, 1-3-7, and so on voicings might make such a tuning very rewarding and open up your fingers to further extensions.

Based on the tuning, I'm guessing he's had some time on a guitar. It's actually a pretty cool idea IMO.

Thanks for the suggestion. I also play a lot of acoustic classical and flamenco guitar so right now sticking with the guitar tuning is really helping keep my bearings on my modes for finding strange 2 handed tapping licks. my near future plans are to buy a midi pickup and make it so my low 2 strings are bass and the higher ones are piano/keyboard, so in turn playing a classical melody will result in a bass line and what the keyboardist would be playing if we so chose to hire one.

yeah playing a lot of complex songs can make you forget to look like you're enjoying what you're doing. but im finding the more we pactice and get comfortable with our set, the less I have to think about it and the more i can rock out =p

It's funny, because it's just a matter of trying to SHOW how much you're enjoying it. Of course you love it, you wrote it. You slaved over it. The trick is to figure out how to make everyone else know it. I find if I let the music really wash over me I naturally give a good show, sometimes it's as simple as smiling, or grooving your head, or stomping your foot at the angry sounding parts. Once you start letting yourself express the music physically it really becomes second nature and you don't have to try at all.
