Well, my two boys (ages 9 & 10) have been practicing since March, and on Friday they finally got their "Two Minutes of Fame". They covered Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" at their elementay school's annual talent show. The boys only got 1:50 or so to do their thang (keep in mind this song is normally over 4 minutes long).
Casey the guitarist and I have been playing for a little less than 2 years, and his brother Julian only started playing bass back in March.
Everything went great! My only regret is that we didn't crank up the Orange Tiny Terror and the Roland Bass Cube 30 even higher! The Tiny Terror held its own, but the Bass Cube was really struggling to keep up with 300+ bodies in the multi-purpose room. (I think I need to upgrade to an Ampeg BA-112!)
The YouTube link below is for the standard definition version, but I've uploaded a higher quality verison. Just click on "Watch in high quality" below the hits "Views" link...and crank up the low end on your speakers! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KWfI1c4OzM
Rock on!

I told the boys that if they learn 6 or 7 more songs, I'll let them do some busking at the Seattle Center this summer armed with some Roland Cube Amps. I think the 10-year-old will be getting a Roland MicroCube Bass RX amp for his birthday in July, so maybe sometime in August the boys will be ready for their first multi-song gig! Quote:

I'm running it through an Avatar 1x12 cab with the broken-in version of the Celestion G12H-30, the "Hellatone 30". Turns out that this is the same speaker Orange uses in the Tiny Terror combo.

good job! | Yeah, he figured that if he was covering a Nirvana classic, he might as well strap on his bass like Krist Novoselic, too.
The body is lowwwww, but at least he keeps the neck pointed up so he doesn't torque his wrist on his fretting hand.

That is so cool. I bet you are very proud!

| | | | That should make your proud! You'll hate the feedback generating when he's 17 playing through 100 watts and a 4x12 hehe. |

He has a pretty nice starting amp too.

A word of caution: Kids have the ability to blow right by you musically. My boys have been playing since they were 6 (twins), now almost 16. It seemed to go from, "Hey, dad, can we play with you?" to "Okay, dad, just do this." very quickly. Actually, that's a pretty great feeling.
And, as you alluded to, you can get away with buying a lot more equipment "for the boys" without aggravating the wife than if it was for you!
Rock on!

| | | | Great Job Dad!!
They did a lot better than a lot of the covers on youtube by folks much older than these guys! (If you can bear it, check some out.. uggg).
I'd wager having a musical, supportive father is a big help there. |
