My first bass solo in a song!

Sign in to disble this ad
So my band recently finished recording a few songs in the studio. This is the first group I've been in that has had me take solos (which took a little getting used to) and this is the first one I've gotten recorded like this.

It's still a rough mix, but I think it sounds pretty good.

Let me know what you think and if you have any feedback or suggestions! I may still have time to re-track a bit. Solo is around 4:45 (I know... long song!)

Thanks!

Your part makes the song sound better. But I guess you need more parts to solo in a such piece...

Nice groove, I wouldn't change a thing.

I'm really digging your tone. Which bass did you record that with? Direct?

Nice, thanks a lot for the feedback, it's much appreciated!

It was recorded direct with my "Squierowsky"... a Squier DAJV modded with a Sadowsky preamp and Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups.

Here's a pic of it with my other cheapo-upgraded basses:

Very cool tune and I like the playing a lot. My constructive criticism, the whole song sounds a bit mid heavy and lacking in low end. I would warm up that keyboard a little and beef up the low end on your bass and kick drum a bit in the final mix. You really want your bass and the kick to make the bottom end much bigger.

Well done!

I'm digging the whole Miller vibe and tone you've got. That's some good stuff.

Thanks for the comments everybody, I really appreciate it. I agree that it sounds a little thin now, but we're heading back to the studio to mix this weekend, so hopefully we can get it sounding better. Thanks again!

Very nice playing.
I agree about it needing a little bit more kick drum.

Real nice playin' bro! Very musical with a strong groove. Great tone.

Putting on my producing/engineering hat, I would take the horns down a bit during the bass solo.

Overall, I'd lower the keys (a LOT) and yes, add more kick drum. And shorten it. : )

I like the playing- it's got a strong groove and it's tasteful. You've created some very noticeable bass lines that fit really well. The final mix should sound even better!

Very nice! I'd say the drums as a whole could be higher in the mix.
