Quite excited! I recorded both these songs for my band, I played guitar and bass on one, just bass on the other. Programmed the drums myself, and my synth guy came over and did the synth.

Recordings by Dudley Grabsch on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

So these are the first songs I've recorded.. came out pretty good if I dont say so myself.

Of course there is room for improvement. Feedback welcome!

Now go have a look!

Nice stuff. Kind of hard core metal meets 80's retro.

80s? hahah which part is 80s style? Sorry, but of all the genres, nothing from the 80s pops in my mind.

I thought the synth sounds were pretty retro. But I may be wrong.

Really? The intro of the first song (More than just special) is so 80's to me!

Ha-ha. For me, some of synth parts reminds 8-bit soundtracks.

Composition is interesting, btw. Good job, man.

Well.. maybe I dont listen to enough 80s music then. The only 80s stuff I listen to is metallica, RHCP, Slayer, etc.

Don't know much Slayer, but wouldn't associate Metallica or RHCP with keyboard sounds.

A few samples that come to mind of why I said 80s:

Thomas Dolby - Europa And The Pirate Twins - YouTube
Icehouse - "Icehouse" - YouTube
Gary Numan - Cars - YouTube
Europe - The Final Countdown - YouTube
Van Halen - Jump (HQ music video) - YouTube

Got another song up, this one is a little bit more bluesy and rock. And maybe a bit less heavy? I dunno, go check it out!

Doesn't sound 80s at all to me and I listen to a bunch of retro and nu-retro (made recently, but sounds like it pre-90s) stuff. No offense of course, but I get the feeling that the folks saying it sounds 80s haven't listened to much power/prog/black/symphonic/gothic metal. Synths have been in all kinds of heavy stuff for ages. Sounds much more like it's bridging the gap between prog and a straight forward heavy metal. Reminds me a lot of the Black Mages, who I totally love. Nice to hear some good stuff posted around this forum for a change .

And no offence taken. You'd be right for me at least that I haven't listened to a lot of "modern" metal. But I don't think that changes anything. The fact that a lot of other bands are inspired by retro sounds doesn't make it not retro

You can't just say "pre 90s" with keyboards...there are distinct sounds from distinct eras. Compare the links i posted earlier to these, the sounds are quite different:

Doctor Who Theme Tune 1963-1969 by Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire - YouTube
THE BEATLES- HERE COMES THE SUN - YouTube (synth in at about 1:40)

It's all pretty simple here...

For my bass; just a Behringer Bass V-Amp plugged straight into the computer. Axe: Ibanez SR406

Guitar, through the V-Amp then I used Guitar Rig 5 (program) for the tone. Axe: Cort EVL K5 (with new Dunlop super heavy strings (wow!))

Programmed the drums using ezdrummer's Drumkit from hell. (good but not much variation, I'd suggest BFD)

Synths; Korg Electribe EMX.

All recorded with Cubase 5.

So apart from the computer, just the V-Amp and Electribe for synths, and you could easily do without these too.

Just listened to your tracks. I dig it. Good stuff. The synth adds a flavor that is catchy and unique.

GOOD STUFF!

I loved it. I hear 70s though. And all I ever listen to is power/prog/black/symphonic/gothic metal. It's my favorite genre of music. OK. 2nd favorite.

Your recording sounds good. I got a vibe of Europe's "The Final Countdown" when the guitar came in (and I don't mean that in any negative way). I hope you post more of music for us to listen to.
