Talking My Latest Overlong And Underthought Solo Bass Piece

I've had this song idea kicking around for a long time now, but never recorded it in a full song format. I usually play it on fretless, but decided to try a decent recording of it with my Elrick singlecut fretted five. Anyways, it's my first "final" recording done with my Looperlative looper. It's all one take, as you'll notice by the occassion "ouch" note I like most of my music a little loose and rough around the edges, much like I like to see in my paintings- you can decide if it's too rough (or too damn long for that matter- didn't realize it was nearly ten minutes until after I was done!). Feel free to give any comments or advice....I'm guessing "too long" may come up

Oh, and there's a video of it as well. I put the camera in the wrong spot though, so much of my fretting hand can't be seen, so it's not too great a watch.

watched the video...

in one word: Peaceful.

It's a nice line you're building on...

I've been up since 6am with the day off... been recording my own stuff a good part of the day. Thanks for the tune, it was a nice end to a cool day!

I like the harmonic motif and the bassline but the the upper register stuff... does not really supplement it well in my opinion. A couple of the "ouch" notes as you said really do stand out a bit much.

The length did not bother me so much because I'm typing up a midterm exam paper, I just feel that the first upper-register section was a little much. If it would have went straight to the over-driven/distorted portion, it would've been a bit better as a stand-alone musical piece IMO.

Cool though =)

Interesting.

The upper register melody was what the original concept was...the rest of the parts were built around it to support it, so I've never really tried it without the upper melody. I may have to try that sometime soon, although personally I love that melody (unless you meant the upper register noodling, which it could certainly do without ).

Very enjoyable, Bryan! It's a normal hectic Monday here at work and it helped relax me a bit. A very soothing piece of music!! Thanks for posting it!

That high pitched thing your using for a basic beat gets really obnoxious after a couple of minutes. I think it really takes away from your piece. Try using a different sound...

Very good stuff, I like the melody and the way it builds up, a very classy piece!

My favourite tune of yours is still "Hungry" (I think that was what it was called). Any chance of a link to the video you made of that?

I've got a couple demo versions of that hanging around- the video is up on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3MnQk591_I

There's a different video of it played with one of my old Elricks here:

I plan on getting a better, finalized version of it made soon.

Pretty good, but I agree with xgabriel--that initial thing you were using for the beat (harmonics?) got REALLY irritating after a while. My ears were very happy near the end of the song when your turned it off

Other than that, I really enjoyed it. I don't normally like "relaxing" or ambient songs, but I have to say I enjoyed that. Any possibility of us getting another take with a bit less of that initial high-piched beat?

Brian - your playing sounds lovely - but that high pitched sound just doesn't work and hurt my head/ears.

My only advice would be let the bass tones sing out more and don't bother with gimmiky effects - I have an EBS Dynaverb pedal and the reverb on that is great - it would work well for something like this - aside from the high pitched thing there were some nice bits in there.

Cheers dude

I can actually mute the whole affected harmonic part, as my affected sounds are recorded on a second channel. I just tried playing it with it completely muted and it takes away from the track though- I'll try lowering its volume and perhaps compressing/limiting to see how it sounds to those it caused pain to

Here's a version with a simple gain drop on the affected channel:

better than the first on that high pitched part, but it's still cutting into my ears a bit. Maybe just because I'm wearing headphones.... I just cut the highs on my player.

Cool song though, very relaxing
