My Sir Duke bass cover.Watch!

Sign in to disble this ad
This is me doing a cover of Sir duke by Stevie Wonder. Its a bit sloppy, but im still working on it and getting it all down tight.

Im using a Warwick corvette double buck and a GK MB210. I recorded it with a flip video.

Please comment on my sloppy playing!

Its not sloppy. My biggest comment is note lengths, like they start at the right point but the lengths don't sound right. When I learned the song that was the hardest part for me.

Hmm. So are you saying im not letting them ring out enough? The main reason I post stuff on here is so people can point out stuff that I need to work on. I appreciate your comment. I don't ever get a chance to play with other bassist and hear there opinions

didn't really hear the whole thing but perhaps the note length is the reason why you thought it sounded sloppy.

nice bass anyway

Not really sloppy but you were rushing at times (didn't watch the whole thing but the first chorus in particular jumped out at me). Have more fun with it. The song is a celebration of music, after all.

I did kinda of rush it. That was like my 10th time trying to record it because in the previous recordings I would miss like 1 note and it would bother me really bad. It seems like whenever it comes down to doing a recording I always get tense and mess up and not play as smoothly.

It seems like maybe the notes need to be more staccato - shorter and snappier, if you know what I''m saying. Good job though!

No problem! You've got a ton of potential; keep playing, and see where it takes you!

BTW, I notice you're from Michigan too; is there a chronic drummer shortage where you're at? For the life of me, I can't find other musicians to play with around here.
EDIT: It looks like we've practically got a conglomerate of Michiganders here; the Stevie Wonder must draw us in.

Agreed that note lenghts are a bit long in spots. I particularly seemed to notice the high part in the bridge. But overall good job.

I was told that "Sir Duke" is a really hard song to learn. I thought you did a good job. Keep it up.

I agree with pocketgroove that ALL of the notes are too long . . . . . .

O god yes. I can't find a drummer anywhere. We use to have a really really good drummer that went to my school and then he moved to Indiana

great playing!
back when that song was first on the radio, we all stopped whatever we were doing and HONED IN on the great unison riff sections... one by one, all us young chums would bring in pieces of it into rehearsals, like a rare text.. "check THIS Part out.. is THAT it? are ya sure? how 'bout THIS section..."
yeah, hit it a little bit more staccato on the choruses, so it punches with the drums a bit more. but you're mighty close!

Good job! I think the feel would be better if you got all the ghost notes in there. Those are a large part of getting the feel of the song right, and would help with the "note length" issue that others have noted.

Sounds good, you got it down tight. I think the advice here is good, shorten up your notes, which will help ease onto that swinging feel a bit and make the part punchier.

It's definitely an intermediate-early advanced tune in terms of when you'd give it to a student. There are some key changes, three distinct grooves, and that break so there's no faking your way through it. Keep at it, OP; I want to hear you really nail it.

Not bad man! Like it was mentioned, a little more staccato in the chorus, but the runs were spot on IMO. You play it way better than I do lol.
