Good playing and I love the concept...but the tone and sound quality in general are pretty bad.

I listened to your track and I liked the performance(s) a lot. You have a lot of sound going on in a narrow slice of the sonic spectrum. And it is almost all in a region of low sensitivity for the listener (low freqs make it harder to identify pitch, location, timing...) The parts are nice, the static sounding drum track is awful (if appropriate) and mixed too far forward. Your mix needs some serious front-to-back work. The tracks are all EQd the same and all lie right on top of each other, making it sound like a cheap octaver instead of a 3-part performance.

Get that drum sound back, spread the individual basses out L-R, pick one of the two melody parts to be front/center, use the other two as accompaniment, not as equals. Even though you want that dry 8-bit NES thing, don't be afraid to put the smallest, driest reverb on the drums to keep them back (rear). You have a great set of basic tracks there, and a little work on the mix would make them sound fantastic. I'm just making suggestions on getting a basic (starting point) mix. You can always shrink a mix, but you should at least have your parts laid out so you can hear them.

I like the drum, it sound super 8 bit but it is indeed a bit to loud.

I like it but the tone kinda sounds like a duck or should I say "Duck Hunt-ish".

My suggestions:

a) keep the melody and bass part as far (from frequencies pov) as possible.
So, one way woul be to record, as you already did, the bass part in the low register of the bass and the melody in the second half of the neck...
If you want really to put a third part pay attention to the arrangements, because with only bass it's really easy to cover the same frequencies and the result will be chaotic (in the video it is difficult to clearly hear all the voices, I know the tracks composed by Kondo, but if it's the first listening I think it's difficult to understand the movements of the voices).
So, I think keeping just the bass and the octave higher melody woul be good.

b) 8bit drum it's a really good idea, but like that doesn't help...
My suggestion is to arrange the drum with more 8bits sounds, not too much, but just few more sounds, so become clear your choice of creating a 8bit drum, and that, for me, it's a good idea.

c) The sound, as said from other user, doesn't help you.
As you have a really good bass, something must be wrong in your recording chain. My suggestion is to record the bass as much clear as possible. For example a small pre-amp in the sound card woul be good.

Then work with EQ or Re-Amp with software (like Guitar Rig or IkMultimedia Amplitube, for example).
If you keep the two bass, put a punchy bass sound for the lower track (not to much, it must be clear the voice), and keep a more pristine and clear sound for the melody... In this way it will sound clear everything and the piece will improve.

Of course, everything IMHO

Thanks for all of the suggestions

ghigo85: I go Bass -> Pedal Board (Korg DT-10 -> Demeter Compulator -> Fulltone BassDrive -> SansAmp -> PC (M-Audio Firewire) I'll try Compulator -> SansAmp -> PC to see if that could clean it up a bit

Maybei ts time to send my bass to get a setup from ZON too
