I've been getting into heavier and heavier stuff, been listening to lots of the following.
Trivium
Meshuggah
Amon Amarth
The Sword
Chimera
Gojira
Dimmu Borgir
The Faceless
Mastodon
and the standard, Killswitch and In Flames
Add anything heavy to the list, im a big fan of Prog as well, bands like The Faceless are amazing, Necroplhagist and all that are alright.

*metal snob mode* None of those metal bands are really brutal. In fact, in most metal circles I've run with (not a part of, I'm not obsessed with metal culture/name dropping/etc) calling Trivium and/or Killswitch "brutal" would get you lynched. But then again, I know some extremists.
Look into grindcore: Doesn't get any more "brutal" (aka non melodic ) than Pig Destroyer or Discordance Axis. And my favorite grind band, the grandaddies: Napalm Death.
Death metal stuff, gotta love Crytopsy for amazingly heavy stuff. From the looks of your list though, look into any metal called, "Melodic metal." That's bands like "In Flames." Don't know much about that genre. If In Flames ditched their singer and his goth moaning, they would be an amazing band.
Also, go back to the roots of this stuff and check out stuff like Celtic Frost, Venom, Voivod.... Slayer? ha.
Anyways, wait for Masked Jackal to show up, he'll school us all.
Echoing the "Death" and "Opeth" comments too. Two of the best prog death metal bands ever. Opeth probably moreso, but Death started it. "Individual Thought Patterns" is a must have Death album, and features some KILLER bass work.

But probably the harder things on there would be The Faceless and probably meshuggah.
I like heavy stuff, but not at the expense of ability. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...iendID=3533294
one of my favorites at the moment, The faceless is amazing.
EDIT: yeah i listen to a lot of melodic stuff, but just finding a band like The Faceless make's me want to hear more bands like them, cuz like you said bands like Trivium and Killswitch, Mastodon... not really brutal, just along the line's of what i like. I should have written this out better hehe.

Haven't listened to Converge or Tusk yet... but if you want mindblowingly heavy, listen to Unearthly Trance.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but I love 'em. Nothing gets me angrier. If you can, pick up their "Times of Grace" album. |

Try: Necrophagist and Nile. |

I'm just not always on the prowl for new metal, since in reality, I'm a big hippy who listens to hippy. Music died after 1974...
... not really, I just mostly listen to older stuff, I was born in the wrong musical era.
