Need Help Remembering A Slow Soul Song

Sign in to disble this ad
There's an older (late 60s-early 80s) slow, sad soul/r&b song that has a long intro of a piano playing a series of arpeggios (they may have been going through a circle of 5ths or something), and when the lyrics kicked in they were something like "as time goes on.."
It got quite a bit of radio play, so should be a bigger hit by whoever it was that did it.
Thanks.

I suppose it is a soulfull tune. I think I just suffer from the usual problem that develops when you play a tune too many times, the spark that the song had tends to dwindle. I may be alone in this, but have noticed this happening with me many times over the years. Take an okay song that's popular, add it to the setlist,...6 months later when you're getting asked to play it twice a night, 5 nights a week,.........I think thats one reason I enjoy playing out more now,..limited gigs equals less time to get burnt out on tunes.

Every time I hear that song, I want to drive my car into a bridge abutment. Terry Kath's vocals are abominable (may he rest in peace) and the flute solo outro is glaringly flat. The melody itself is essentially a Mel Bay piano exercise. Other than that, its a great tune worthy of the repeated airplay.

Ah, I can understand that. I've only heard it a few times in my life though, so it's still fresh to me.

I have lots of "typical" soul singer albums- Otis Redding, Al Green, Maxwell I still find the Chicago song very soulful.
