If you want some more upbeat Ska/Soul/Reggae, you could always check out the Aggrolites and The Specials. Other than that, +1 to all that has been said before.

The Harder They Come soundtrack is one of my faves. It has great cuts by Jimmy Cliff,Toots & the Maytells &More. Not a bum cut on it.

Here's some other coolstuff.

Black Uhuru. Their "Red" album is best. The Best of is great too.

Burning Spear. The Marcus Garvey album is classic.

The Heptones. The Nightfood album is killer

Linton Kwesi Johnson. British based(Jamaican born)dub poet.Recites his excellent poetry over killer grooves. This is not typical dancehall stuff.Seek out his Bass Culture album.I thought it was the best album of 1980 period.Forces of Victory is great too.Almost all his work is.

There are a couple various artist CDs out there that have excellent roots bass playing on them.

Select Cuts From Blood & Fire: Excellent sampler of some lesser know artist like King Tubby, Keith Hudson etc.

The Front Line collection: Excellent sampler of bands like The Mighty Diamonds, Gladiators, Culture, Twinkle Brothers etc.

Lee Perry's Arkology: A Bible of reggae grooves, kinda like the Motown box for reggae.

Good suggestions (though most have already been mentioned). I just wanted to point out that Ryan Moore (Twilight Circus) is actually Canadian - he just happens to now live in the Netherlands.

The Easy Star All Stars.

http://www.myspace.com/easystarallstars

These are the same guys that took Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and remade it - while keeping the same tempo (for all of you dark side of Oz fans) and same level of musicianship as pink floyd.

From there, look at the rest of the Easy Star Records lineup. John Brown's Body is a great start.

Also, Lions are a great reggae act from L.A.

Since you're looking for more upbeat, modern stuff, MOrgan Heritage has been mentioned. Also look at Chezidek, Beres Hammond, Tarrus Riley (highly recommended), Glen Washington, Cha'Maine and any amount of compilation stuff that's out there. Only thing about the compilation stuff, is that almost all of it will be electronic.

Anything Clinton Fearon (Gladiators, Black Ark, Yabby You) plays on bass is boss. A good hip-hop/reggae/dub weave comes courtesy of The Drastics outta Chicago. Victor Rice too. Keep listening to Family Man, though, I always hear something new and cool after all these years.

Also, Augustus Pablo, Horace Andy, Cornell Campbell, John Holt, Alton Ellis, Kevin Boothe, The Mighty Diamonds,Leroy Smart, etc.

Look for producers' work like Lee Perry, King Tubby, Joe Gibbs, Harry Mudie, the aforementioned A. Pablo, Niney The Observer, etc.

Too much great stuff out there, you will never get bored finding quality Roots, Dub, DJ, Rockers, Rock Steady, and Ska recordings, and you will recognize riddims from each era and style as they are versioned and versioned again.
