There's a free download of their new single for 24 hours off the Roadrunner website.
It's an incredible mix. John Myung's tone with the Bongo 6 is SO full of WIN. |

it doesn't really sound like them... They actually sound more prog-ish in that song than they usually do, it kinda reminds me of Threshold.
All in all, I liked the song. If the rest of the album sounds like this, I'll probably buy it.

Shame - Systematic Chaos was a really weak album and i was really hoping for another 'Train Of Thought' or 'Octavarium' this time round. Sadly it looks like more of the same, with none of the musical ingenuity that we know they can display.
Looks like their Roadrunner era will be remembered for dumping songwriting in return for record sales. And who's styling those guys these days? They look like an identikit 'mean n moody thrash band'.
*Is it Portnoy that's lost it? I'll bet it is - All i hear him doing is grunting in the background these days - and i'm sure we'll get another dreary 'confessional' on the new album*
Jeez - gimme my favourite band back, please! |

They went through a lot of changes and tried lots of different things. Whether I liked it or not, I could at least respect it. I typically don't say anything if I don't like what some or another artist is doing -- hey, it's their art, right? I can't help myself: this song is horrific. The song-writing is sub-mediocre. This is the kind of stuff that teenagers who are first cutting their teeth write. I'd be curious to know what thought process led to this. |

A hook here, a little self-indulgent shredding there...
It's Dream Theater.
Either you like it or you don't.
I still compare everything they do to Images and Words. My favorite...and yet, I'll buy this one when it comes out.
I hardly think it is a train wreck of fail. If it is, I wish I could "fail" with such skill.

I love some of DT's stuff, and own most of their CD's...and have seen them several times...but having said that, I still have a hard time getting past James LaBrie's vocals...I've never really liked him...would love to have heard someone with pipes like David Coverdale front these guys...
and yes, they are a bit self-indulgent (a couple of them anyways... ...) |

I mostly agree about the vocals. I have managed to listen around them for 20 something years. I still rate DT as one of my most influential groups.
I like that they take chances, changing their sound. Even though I&W is my favorite, I don't want to hear that album 50 times.

am I the only one who thought their new song was cool? IMO it actually sounded alot more well-thought-out than the usual fluff they release.

I said I didn't think it was as bad as some of the folks in front of me thought. I said I would end up buying it. So what if it has hooks? What sells albums? I don't think it's a "fail" as someone else did...and an 8 minute + SINGLE comparison? Silly.
Yes, I'm an old fan. Just because I said I compare all their stuff to a particular album they've done, doesn't mean I don't like where they are going...I think I might have said something like that somewhere else.
Now I'm back off to my aquavit...mmm
