A new effort with another Rush tune

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everybody.

I've just uploaded a new video to YouTube trying to show how to play another well-known Rush tune (after my attempt with "Freewill"). I played it at the original tempo, also slowed it down to 75% and, as I say in the video notes (please read them), I'm the first one who must follow my own advice (keep practicing!). But aside from providing more support material for my students, my only intention is to try to help all fellow bassists interested on learning how to play this cool tune.

Wanna know which one is it? Just CLICK HERE.

I like it Alvaro. Great job (as usual).
I know the song has been originally recorded with a Rickenbacker, but IMHO it sometimes hides some "nuances" or "articulation" that comes from Geddy´s fingerstyle technique (think his Wal tone in ASOH as the opposite).

I believe you´ve nailed the bassline pretty well. As you´ve said, it lacks a bit of fluidity in some parts (the riffs for example) but is good overall.

I´ve found this other one to illustrate the articulation I meant

Hey Billy, thank you for your comment! I already saw that version. That guy did a great job and actually, I think it's the best homemade version you can find on YouTube.

BTW, Geddy used his Ric on the "Exit... Stage Left" tour and that's the instrument heard on the live album, but as far as I understand, he used his Fender Jazz Bass on the studio recording. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Awesome Alvero, Rush bass lines are to me some of the most difficult to nail. Slowing it down like that is a great for the students. Wish I had that when I first learned it.

I know he used both his Rick and his Fender in "Moving Pictures". I´ve read somewhere that "Vital Signs" was recorded with his Fender Jazz, but don´t know if he used it in any other song by then.
