New Fretless MP3 from the Munki

Hi folks,

I hope you've all been having a good summer - I went to jazz school (Jamey Abersold's week long course in London) and it was very good, plus I finally got myself a new PC which means I can start making some decent-sounding home recrodings. As I'm still breaking my new fretless 5 in I am still a little cautious about playing it out live but I am working on getting my s*** together - and here's a little noodle I recorded a couple of days ago. It's based on the a section from a gary Willis tune called \Speak' (on a Tribal Tech record) - there are definitely a couple of annoying bum notes, but in the main it sounds pretty good - apologies for some of the less inspired, speedy, runs - this is me in practice mode, I'm working on better phrasing but hey - I hope you like some of it (this is not another Wooten-workout!)

BTW *Lots of bass features coming soon for TB - Bona live footage and Matt Garrison interview - keep checking the front page!*

The tone of the "lead" bass reminds me of Marcus Miller's fretless work on his The Sun Don't Lie album; the backing part reminds me of Wooten (although not one of his "workout" parts). Anyhow, it all fits together very nicely. When's the Munki album due out

Thanks Wulf - you're right about the Marcus thing - it hadn't really occurred to me until you mentioned it. Regarding the album - it's coming! I am thinking of getting something together and either selling CDs or downloads from Munkio.com, either way TB will know about it first...

This is the bass BTW...

Re: Jaco sounds

I'm not sure if that is a compliment or not, I guess I'll take it as one - my primary influence on fretless is Gary Willis but I'm still trailing his incredible musicianship - I do love Jaco though - and it's the big problem when you pick up a fretless - because we all have to deal with the language that he invented - I hope it doesn't sound too derogatory when I do it, I'm being as sincere as I can be when I play.

Cheers and peace

Mike
