New Hadrien Feraud CD preview/review

I just got an advance copy of Hadrien's debut solo album and I think it's really killing... I was always impressed with his playing but this actually shows he has some serious depth to his musicianship beyond his outrageous technique. He plays a lot of keyboards too - seemingly as well as he plays bass, he also covers the John McLaughlin tune 'High Jacked' - from the Que Alegria album that first introduced the world to Dominique DiPiazza - and he plays it note perfect and then some and is even joined by McLaughlin on the tune and it's all rather good. There's a funny abstract version of Giant Steps too with Linley Marthe playing both keys and soloing on bass as well. There are a few little weird freak out 'interludes' with HF and Linley as well where they just play 'free' and having seen Linley with Joe Zawinul recently they are two players/friends who are very much on the same level - conceptually and technically. The overall vibe is a real mix of classic fusion, some heavy dance beats and grooves with some world and soundtrack style textures - it's a bit uneven with some tunes rambling a bit - but considering this is the work of a 23-year old kid - it's still hugely impressive.

And his playing... far from wanting to sound OTT or sycophantic - Hadrien is a mother****er - he's pretty much got every technical and harmonic base well and truly covered and his lines sound as effortless as they are jaw dropping - his style is like a cross between Jaco and Dominic DiPiazza - who also guests on two tunes - with a touch of Matt Garrison, bebop and Bach thrown in for good measure. it's obvious he's transcribed a lot of Joe Zawinul too as no matter how insanely fast his playing gets, it always seems melodic, there's also a 'heavy' Weather Report sound throughout the album.

Whether you want to give up or get practicing after you hear him Feraud is a fresh talent with decades ahead of him to mature (not that he lacks maturity) even further, and if you are lucky enough to be able to catch him live on tour with John McLaughlin, Gary Husband and Mark Mondesir later this year - get the hell out and see him!

Just thought some of you guys would appreciate a heads up on this CD

Mike

im eagerly awaiting the cd. after hearing the clips on his myspace i had to have it. im a total convert. after hearing him on industrial zen i wasnt sold but i now am officially eating my words. i started transcribing one of his solos and it was a lot of chromatic and pentatonic stuff but how clean and effortless he made it sound at that speed blew my mind.

+1 You and me both! thankfully the tone is very clear on this album - but it doesn't make transcribing his sick lines any easier...

I've been waiting for this one as well. I though Hadrien said it was out already someplace, but I haven't been able to find it.

Oh and Mike- have you heard of a bassist named Michael Olatuja? He's on the London scene and plays with Soweto Kinch and Troy Miller. He had a solo CD put out apparently but I can't find it anywhere, nor can I find any way to contact him (no website, etc.).

I have heard Michael - I saw him live at Ronnie Scott's a couple of years back - he plays a rather lovely looking Fodera (a SC Emperor I believe) sorry to say I have no knowledge of his CD - but there's a cool video of him busting some grooves with amazing drummer Troy Miller and Jean Toussaint here:

Another cool London cat to check out is Anothony Tidd - he has a band called Quite Sane - really cool nu-jazz hip hop fusion hybrid stuff with some killing bass lines on it - well worth investigating.

Cheers

I love that clip- I wish there was more. I'm the one who asked if anyone knew his rig a month ago I'm thinking about ordering Troy Miller's solo CD from Amazon UK (not available in the US). I've heard of Quite Sane many times on this board, but have never checked them out. I should go do that.

Wink Hadrien FERAUD my Album

Hello Mike , hello guys....
Thank you for your nice words , I'm glad you enjoyed my album Mike .
Regardind the number of messages I get everyday on Myspace, it seems that it's difficult for the moment to get my album !!
Dreyfus/sony told me that it'll be released in USA , 1rst week of June , and maybe a bit earlyer on "pré-order" with Abstractlogix and Audiophil imports....
Anyway , I can tell you , that it is runing very well in Europe .
I put you here the cover with the list of the friends that use to participate at my album .
I would thanks again all of you , for your kind support ; it'll be nice to meet some of you during the John McLAUGHLIN U.S.A Tour next September .
All my best

Do you know yet if there are gonna be dates in Canada for the Mclaughlin tour?

I'd definitely go if you ever came to Montreal.

News from Hadrien Feraud.

After his great solo album and his future tour with Mac Laughlin.

It's seems that he recorded in april with Chick Corea and the drummer Richie BARSHAY.

:P
