A Night in Monte Carlo... live with orchestra and Roy Hargrove.
Pretty killer... kind of freshens up the Marcus thing to my ear. It is only available as an import at the moment, but should be at Amazon as a reasonably priced non-import within the month.
Highly recommended... a bit more compressed tone than on his other live CD's, some fretless playing... very nice!
FYI!
Here is a clip of the first cut I found on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YMYxgrdSxE

| | | | Note: Mostly Marcus on fretless... very different CD... very nice! Almost reminds me a bit of the old Grusin orchestral jazz discs. Nice! |

Cool... | I agree... not much more the hear with his amazing slapping, etc. if you have the other CD's. This is quite different. That clip I posted is an outlier on the CD actually (sounds great also though!). |

I liked it, but it was about 4 minutes too long -- for me. Long solos over one chord get boring fast -- to me. |

No matter - I'll give it a listen and buy it if it works for me!

Here is a clip of the first cut I found on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YMYxgrdSxE | I was hoping for a change of pace from Marcus when I clicked on that link and the subsequent videos but I heard what I always hear from Marcus: playing that doesn't serve the music. He tries to take pop and slap and fit it in every song and it just doesn't groove and is distracting from the rest of the music.
Take this cut for instance.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZcDwvF37eI
It starts out with a lot of promise. Using an orchestra on the classic Miles tune is a cool change of pace but then Marcus comes in and it goes down from there. His playing doesn't fit. I wish he would just hang back and swing like Genus or Deidda.
Of course this is all IMO and I know some cats dig it. But for me, it just reinforces why I can't get into Marcus' playing. |

For me, Miles stopped being relevant after Bitches Brew. You wanna hear bass playing, -- Nefertiti baby!
I've always felt Marcus is a bit of a one trick pony, but he's really, really, good at that trick. (Even though he should pay royalties to Louis Johnson with every song he plays). |

I like the concept in general but these two tracks aren't terribly interesting. Parts of it do feel forced. It's him doing his normal thing with an orchestra as opposed to doing something a little different to suit a new setting. However, you can't expect a player to reinvent themselves constantly. It's pretty cool anyhow.

No matter - I'll give it a listen and buy it if it works for me! | Agreed. I REALLY want to enjoy his music but it always just a handful of songs on his CDs that I actually end up liking. I'm listening to the clips on Amazon and finding myself liking the sections with just the orchestra moreso than those with Marcus playing! The weirdest part about it all is that Marcus' playing style is right up my alley.
Anyone know if there's a place to take a listen to the entire tracks? Quote:

Going a little off topic here's a rendition of So What that you might not expect but sounds fantastic, especially when it gets into the solos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSCObIXDCJc

No body is accusing him of being incapable just that he's really overusing a particular style of playing and that it's getting tired.

| | | | I actually dig this CD quite a bit, but only because it is a bit different for Marcus (all the fretless tracks versus the classic Marcus J slap tone). I too have tired of that quite a bit.
It is what it is though, and if you don't dig Marcus, well, then you don't dig Marcus! |
