I'm honestly very surprised that I couldn't find a thread about this already, what with all the fellow prog-heads on here.

definitely check it out, it's another good one. It's a little less... prog-ish than some of their past installments [it almost sounds like indi-rock at some points], though it's still a great album regardless.

They're performing in Baltimore next Friday night at the Ram's Head Live - planning to check them out. Do they put on a good show?

If it's a bit less proggy, I think i'll check it out. I liked In Absentia and Deadwing, but kind of lost interest with Fear of a Blank Planet. Album was just a bit too drawn out.

it does resemble In Absentia a bit.

I personally liked Fear of a Blank Planet a bit more, but that's just my perspective

Not sure about a "a good show", but they sound great, just like the recordings. When I saw them they had a cheeky psychedelic light show.

I would recommend seeing them.

Tom Jones does it better!
Buckethead is playing the night before, I'm gonna try to catch both shows.

Seeing them tonight here in Seattle, first show of the tour.
I personally really enjoy the new record.

For me, I ADORE(D) In Absentia (fragile, violent), the minute it came out, was less enthusiastic about Deadwing (stripped down, a bit commercialized to my ear), once again DIED of happiness over FOABP (energetic, intense, haunting) as well as Nil Recurring, and.... have yet to decide my final feelings on The Incident. Certain songs like Bonnie the Cat and Time Flies are exceptional, then again Drawing the Line is a sad effort and Remember Me Lover should have been released a decade ago - this might be the same as Deadwing for me, a decent album following a great album.

Oh well. Maybe it'll grow on me. I'm seeing them for the third time this Saturday, maybe the material will kill live.

I saw PT last night in Seattle and have to say after about a dozen shows this one was a little on the weak side. The new record is much better than Fear of a Blank Planet which is pure crap, but not as good as In Absentia or Deadwing.

It's kind of disappointing that they only played 1 song from their pre-metal band era (Russia on Ice).

Saw them at the 930 club which I think was their first US tour after Deadwing. Good show but what I remember was the drummer was awesome.

just downloaded it and so far, it's O.k. not great & not horrible. I like it, but the band is just not on a upswing, just treading water, it seems
.

Dissapointing overall I would say.

I dig it... definite maturing as a writer. This is (to me so far), a well written album that while nothing stands out as a 'hit', is perfectly ordered and without filler... one of the best 'concept' albums at first listen (I only just grabbed it off Amazon... $9.99 download ).

To be honest, Steve can do no wrong in my ears... I'm not quite a fanboy, but I think I come from a lot of the same places his influences lie. Plus he's got a great sense of space, time and tones. If ever I was to the point of making a 'real' album, I'd love to hire him to produce and engineer it.

It just seems to me that, he or they DO NOT have their "landmark" definitive recording or effort as of yet. So close but never nailing it.

What angle are the lyrics on the new album? Are they all crotchety like the last couple? That's been my biggest gripe with this band. Musically, I'm generally OK with them, but the lyrics have been so "these kids and their baggy jeans" that I wasn't even going to bother buying the new record. So what is "The Incident" about? Thanks

The Incident is quite a nice break from their more common lyrical themes. Honestly, I don't really know what the hell they're singing about on most of the songs, but it's still a good repreive.

Here's a great interview with Steven Wilson where he explains "The Incident".:

IMO - for what it's worth - the new album has some great spots, but a lot of it is 'more of the same.'

Regardless, I just saw them live in NYC, and the show was fantastic.

I'm surprised at the lukewarm response here. I think it's their best work since In Abstentia. The first disc flows extremely well, and it's pretty incredible that Steven wrote it all in order. The great songwriting, harmonies, production, and layers of sounds are as good as ever.
