New rock sub-genre created

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, I'll take this opportunity to mention that I've identified a new sub-genre of rock.

And that is "BEARD ROCK".
Band of Horses, Iron and Wine, KOL, The Sheepdogs, ect.

Although styles, trends and fashions all come in waves, and truth be told that there's really nothing new under the sun.
Puddle of Mud, Seether, and Nickelback are the new Pearl Jam, STP and Nirvana, just for a few examples.

Examples of the predecessors of Beard Rock are CCR, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, 38 Special ect.

I must close with stating that Beard Rock may possibly include the presence of flannel, denim, or plaid button-up shirts.

Nickelback isn't the new anything.

Also, My Morning Jacket could fit in the genre.

Damn near any band from Denton, TX would be considered beard rock.

Man, I'm 42. I've worn a beard since I was 18. I only ever shaved it completely off one time, and I've no plans to ever do it again.

If I had different facial structure, I wouldn't even wear a beard. I know that beards are often (sometimes rightfully) viewed as a fashion statement and that a lot of guys sport them as "attitude beards" and such.

But that's not me. I could absolutely not care less about what is in style or what is hip or not.

I wear a beard for two reasons and two reasons only:

1. I am either too busy and/or too lazy to shave every day.

2. My natural face needs to be covered up as much as possible, by whatever means necessary.

I guess I should say I'm sick of "fashion beards." The sooner they move on to something else-- and they will, en masse-- it'll be better for you "naturally bearded" folks as well.

I'm in love with bicycles and I can't wait for the hipsters to be rid of their ridiculous fixed gears. Its just such a script...

You know what all this reminds me of?-- The Who in the 60's. I've heard that they were "fashion pioneers" but in interviews with them IIRC, they mentioned that they copped the styles on the street very consciously and then made it look like they were setting the styles.

Yeah, I hear you. Things go in cycles like that. Right now where I'm at the big trend seems to be guys in skintight peg pant jeans with elaborately unkempt but fairly short hair, big fluffy beards and thick nerd glasses who play and listen to whiny, jangly indie-pop.

Not that all whiny, jangly indie-pop is a bad thing, but sometimes I hear these bands over and over and think "Are their balls ever going to drop?"

I mean, it'd be nice to know that they actually CAN rawk out some, though I acknowledge not everything needs to sound like Motorhead, nor would I want everything to sound like that, much as I dig Motorhead.

I don't mean to sound like I'm some Old Wise Man, but I've been around music all over the country for decades. Maybe it's just my age, maybe it's the fact that I have kids who are approaching their teens, but I really gave up paying attention to what was considered hip and had street cred a looong time back. I still keep up with current music and try to find stuff I like, but I'm too old and chubby and concerned with too many other things to care at all about trying to be fashionable. I'd look like a joke doing that anyway.

Outside of work I pretty much wear the same "uniform" I've worn since I was a little kid:

Plain t-shirt, Levis and Converse low tops.

Hey, when you find a formula that works for you, and it's cheap and comfortable...

AMEN!! I am sadly in the college age and everyone is a hipster. When i was about 13 I bought a pair of those Buddy Holly glasses and got made fun of so much for it and now 11 years later the people that were making fun of me are now wearing them. Hipsters blow and so does their music. These is a band in town that plays hipster rock and gets paid more than any band in town and is easily the least talented and pathetic lyrics and still gets booked every weekend. People are sheep.

I have read that my morning jackets lead singer wears the beard and hair so he can hide in it. He is a shy person who struggles with the spotlight. My morning jacket f-n is amazing. I personally think the band is one of the most genuine artists out today.

Here's a pretty beardy band of local guys who definitely don't wear hipster glasses or play whiny pop:

I have come undone....

Clutch - "Burning Beard" DRT Entertainment - YouTube

Yeah, beards seem to be the thing lately. I've had one for ten years now. I'm so fashionable the rest of the world needed a decade to catch up to me.

+ 1

I agree, the whole unshaven or stubbly look isn't counter-culture now unless it's like 2 feet long. I just grew my goatee out longer so it doesn't look like I'm just trying to copy Ashton Kutcher or whoever with my stubble. We should be in for another dose of grunge again soon...I sense a 90's comeback will be hitting us soon lol
