If the whimsy strikes you, please give these tracks a listen and give me some feedback. These are pre-mastering so the levels aren't set in stone, but it is close. Let me preface these by saying they're on the heavier side. I recorded with my fretless Roscoe SKB3006 through a BassPOD and a Sansamp for those interested.
The 2 tracks are Movements 1 and 3 on this page.

that was pretty damn good! I have no critique, I liked it. I guess if there was anything, the bass was a little quiet at times, but I'm listening through headphones right now so it could just be that. Otherwise that was quite cool, good work, both pieces.
edit:edit
I really liked the acoustic breaks, notably the bass parts.

On "Movement 1", I felt that the first acoustic part kind of came out of nowhere. I went back and listened again and I heard the drums and the guitars speed up, but it sounded kind of marginal, not a very obvious buildup. This may be nick-picking, for myself, I'm a big fan of sudden changes in dynamics and tempo, I don't know if you intentionally made it subtler. But I thought when you do a second time, and really quickly shift into the acoustic part right near the end of the same song it sounds really awesome.
I really liked "Movement 3", really bad ass.

I think I agree on the bass volume on the sections that aren't acoustic. I think that's the only thing I'll be bringing up during mastering.
The drums probably do speed up a little on the first track. That's how our drummer tends to play it, so we stuck with it . |

As for critique, I think the distorted rhythm guitars are a bit muddy / bass heavy, notably the one on the left on Movement One. I'd eq a *little* back out; it'll clean up your track. I also agree that the bass should be a touch louder. Other than that, sounds real good!
Oh, and I love fretless in metal!
Nice work!

I think he did all the music in attempts to find a band who would "cover his stuff"... that's what his page suggests.

The 2 movements were actually made with a complete band. I just uploaded those on my previous project's page out of laziness.
agreatheight - Funny you should mention that. We've actually been hassling the guitarist on the left about his tone being bass heavy. The typical Dual Rectifier issue. |

But don't get me wrong, I LOVE Opeth. I am listening now. Obviously you have done a great work here and I have no critque to offer. However, I am glad to listen to it for free. |

And the Mesa's are something else. Don't get me wrong, it all sounds great... but I'd EQ some of the bass out of his signal and boost up your track when he's not watching, hehe. I think it'd do the song right!

Really great bass, and your another proof that FL can work in metal for those who say otherwise! Reminds alot of Steve DiGiorgios work on Iced Earth-Dracula and his work with Vintersorg. Should boost the bass a bit tho. It doesnt stick out of the mix enough at many parts, but Great job on the bass!
As for the rest of the band im not gonna give any detailed opinions, but ill say it sounds very good completely honest! Def like the progressive sound.
Couldnt get the second one working, so this is based on the first one

Thanks again guys. There is a clear Opeth influence with the earlier material but we're slowly steering away from this with the new material and hopefully finding our own sound.
The bass volume should be adjusted in the mix this coming week. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
