So i just got to hear a preview of the entire new Type O Negative album, Dead Again!
Im not sure how many people here are fans of there's, but I figured I'd post a short review.
First of all this is Type O Negative's first release outside of the evil clutches of RoadRunner Records, hahaha. The album's sound as a whole, has a lot more of their weird brand of thrashy almost punk sound to it. It kind of harkens back to their first two albums, or even somewhat reminds me of Carnivore (Peter Steele's band before Type O) in some parts, but without sounding re-hashed. It not really what I expected the album to sound like, but I'm not dissapointed. I was actually pleasantly suprised with the direction they took. It doesn't really sound like anything they have ever released, but in a good way. It still sounds like nothing but Type O Negative, but it's fresh. Don't worry though, it still has their classic crazy slow tempo'd Black Sabbath meets Beatles meets Goth Rock sort of feel. A Few Songs That Stood Out: (I know these are vague reviews, but remember I have only heard the album once)
"Tripping A Blind Man" - A good example of how they seem to mix their older albums thrashier aesthetics in. I really like how this song has a really thrashy sort of first half that slowly melts into a more melodic jam.
"September Sun" - A really awsome "almost ballad". No one can write ballads like Type O.
"These Three Things" - This song is the 14:21 long jam out. This is one of the coolest songs I think Type O Negative has ever written. It's a classic example of their talent for creating really long songs that never get boring. This song goes through all the spectrums of Type O and then some. I liked every minute of it.
"An Ode To Locksmiths" - This has a sort of Black Sabbath-ish blues metal feel to it. I really like the change up that starts at 3:18, haha it almost has a Kiss feel to it at this point.
"Hail and Fairwell to Britain" - The albums closer, and one of the best songs on the album. It's probably one of the most classic Type O sounding songs on the album. The perfect blend of heavy/melodic, all in a sort of classic rock frame of mind.
Overall the album friggin rocks. I have been a fan of this band since I was pretty young. They were pretty much the band that got me into heavier musics when I was a kid. THough they have dissapointed me a few times over the years with some of their material. With this album I wasnt floored by every song on the album, but it was far from a dissapointment.
So anyone who is a Type O fan should love this album. If you have never heard this band, they are definetly worth checking out.

I was initially loving the album just because I was so stoked that the released something, but after a month or so I was just bored with it and rather disappointed. If "These Three Things" is any indication of the album I would assume it should be really good. You can hear this track on their website's opening page as well as on SPV's (new label) site.
As far as surprise for the thrash direction, Pete has been saying he wanted to do one more hard album for years. I guess being clean has allowed him to achieve his goals. Either way, can't wait for this album to drop. |

Looking forward to this, like all of what they do.

I've been waiting for the heavier side of TON to reemerge since "October Rust", as much of a masterpiece as it is.
As for "Life Is Killing Me", it's not the absolute best the band has done but I believe a major improvement from "World Coming Down". "YDKMIGTHTKY (Gimme That)" is one of their best songs, period. |

I read an article where they talked about doing one for the album, and even recorded it, but didn't put it on the album.

I like TON, or at least Bloody Kisses and October Rust. The rest of it is kinda redundant. |

I've been listening to the older stuff lately and remembering how much i love the sheer alienated tone of those albums. (I am a Carivore fan too.) World Coming Down and Life is Killing Me were fairly large disapointments for me and not because they are slower or more polished. I love October Rust and it is both. The lyrics and the overall strength of the songs has declined the last few albums. Too much of the buzzy bass sound and not enough raw emmotion made tthem sound like they were in a rut or something. I loved the least worst album though. It's never Enough & 12 Black Rainbows are two of their greatest songs I think, and I had never heard them before the best of album.
Tangent:
It always amazed me how much I have tried to avoid the "buzzy" bass sound when playing and making recordings and that some bassists would strive for that sound. (I also think of this everytime I listen to Voivod-Angel Rat...How great would this album be redone with a better bass tone?) Oh well, I still love TON. Not every album can be a Classic.

i once heard a story that when rick turner was the bass tech for the who that john entwistle wanted all of his basses to buzz evenly across all of the strings...apparently that lit rick's ass on fire
can't wait to pick up this disc...i liked those tunes on least worst of, too...12 black rainbows and it's never enough are awesome songs...pete steele is an excellent song writer and quite the interesting bassist...definitely not enough love for that guy in the bass community...hell, i wonder if he even considers himself a bassist probably not... |

I will admit, Summer Breeze isn't their greatest tune, but I still think their version of Cinnamon Girl kicks ass. That being said, the album is great! Combination of old and new styles. A must for all TON fans!
