Sign in to disble this ad
this thread will probably get murdered by metalheads and sabbath fans, but does the bass intro to nib totally sound like someone whos been playing for like 3 months and just learned the pentatonic scale?
couldnt he have come up with something better for the intro to that song?
and that effect...ahhhhhhhh, gross

If you're going to rag on a song, at least get the title right. That particular part is called Bassically.

It's great fun to play and I love the effect, so obviously I disagree with your assessment.

My fun take: http://nad.ultimatemetal.com/geezerNAD.mp3

Let me guess, you'd like it better if everyone kept on shredding at fast as they possibly can at all times?

There's this wonderful thing called "perspective" that will come in handy later in life. Unfortunately, it doesn't exist in teenagers. I know--I used to be one.

NIB rocks ! What effects were used ?

NIB rocks and that's no B.S.

NIB is one of my favorite bass lines ever! 'Bassically' features;
1. String bending technique
- 1/4, 1/2, and full step bends

2- Use of effects
- I don;t just mean the phaser, playing wise, Geezer has a great sound from plucking a P-bass close to the neck and use extreme EQ settings to get 'scooped' mids

3 Composition
Most (maybe all) of this tune is based on a penatonic minor. Nothing complex, but I'm one of these "old school" guys who think a solo should be melodic as oppsoed to be a display of Wootenistic tecniques!

Geezer use of distortion and an envelope filter to really add to the song.

Do any Sabbath experts know what kind of envelope filter was used ?

I'm not in love with it personally, but then I don't hold a great love for metal. I can appreciate what it did for bass playing at the time, even in spite of the overwhelming presence of "The Ox"!

I read one time that Sabbath kept things simple on purpose. They remembered growing up listening to the Beetles and being able to play their songs. They had so many intros and outros on their albums because that was their personal play time. The songs themselves followed:

"Don't play me a riff that would impress Satriani. Play me a riff that makes a kid at home want to pick up a guitar and learn it with some practice."

--Ozzy

I know its not Iommi or Geezer saying it, but he's mentioned that's how all his bands have ever gone by.
