Another new NIN album? Apparently. It's also 100% free. Quote: |

the music is available in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE. your link will include all options - all free. all downloads include a PDF with artwork and credits.
for those of you interested in physical products, fear not. we plan to make a version of this release available on CD and vinyl in july. details coming soon. | I've listened to it once through so far. I think it's going to come across really well when they tour this summer, and it's very different from Ghosts I-IV. http://dl.nin.com/theslip/signup

Trent's at it again!
This should be interesting. I'm waiting for the download e-mail.
My girlfriend really likes the single "Disclipine", so I know she's looking forward to this album. I'm not 100% sure how to feel about it yet... I'll wait to listen to the rest of the album before I make a judgment call.

I'm still waiting for BP to do at least a bit of a feature on him if not a cover. I know he's had some good bass guys in the chair but seriously, his bass lines be they keyboard or not are amazingly good lines. |

A couple questions come to mind regarding the release of free music:
How will the recording engineers (mixing, mastering, etc.) get reimbursed for their work?
Can they collect royalties for radio air-play if the album was "free"?
Just curious. I'm sure there are tons more implications to consider. Anyone have insight?

I would not be surprised if they did this entire project for free, because they are very much a part of Nine Inch Nails themselves.
I really like this album, it's a lot less electronic than year zero, It's almost a grungier With Teeth sound. Also, to those of you waiting for a download link, you can google a torrent and download it, that's what I ended up doing. Trent appears to be encouraging torrenting the album for higher qualities.

Most likely there will some type of advertisement revenue and they will be getting paid off/reiumbursed in one way or another. Alternative revenue streams such as merch and concert sales will also take effect due to the massive amounts of people downloading the album for free. I guess it all pays off in the end. |

Just taking a stab at it. A year or so from now, I'll have a better answer (I'm off to law school this fall).

I'm sure the studio guys got paid, just not from downloads (unlike Ghosts, which made a tremendous amount of money). The album is being released in June in stores, so there's some actual revenue there. Releasing music free doesn't mean no one makes any money, it just means that when the CD is finally purchased, a lot more of it goes into the artists' pocket, and not into some label's.
Also, NIN is so self-sufficient that I bet their cost for production is a lot lower than you may think. When all the gear and the studio and the time is yours, your cost falls dramatically.
Also, Discipline is pretty good, but it doesn't really change at all for the whole song, so what you hear in the first minute is what you're going to hear for the following 2 or 3. The video for it makes it FAR more listenable over time! Finally, the bassline for "The Four of Us Are Dying" is real cool. |

| | Guest Friend and Endorsee of Larry | | | | ya, it's still registered under ASCAP for the songs so royalties are there for sure for radio/licensing/etc. I'm sure Trent would have paid the guys up front for their work as well as they get points for units and/or song credits. An awesome way to do it. A little harder for the one footing the initial bill but Trent's got a little cash left and the way they work I'm sure production costs are really low.
I'm definitely digging what I've had a chance to listen to so far, some tracks almost remind me of Broken era stuff.... |

Hard to believe it's been, what, 18 years that NIN has been around. I remember seeing them at Lollapalooza I in support of Pretty Hate Machine! I think that was 1990.

I haven't listened to them since I grew tired of TDS and couldn't get into TF or anything after it. I still am always curious, though, whether or not they can or will make something that I find interesting. This is a perfect way for those of us who may have withered away from NIN to get back into the groove and see what's up. I dl'd it, but haven't listened to it yet. If it's good, I'll buy it later, and possibly go back and buy some of others that I missed.
Curious, though...are there any audiophiles here who actually got the supermegaultra file???
