Pretty much what the title suggests.

But then again, I hear a lot of people calling Sonic Youth "noise rock" but I usually think of Wolf Eyes (who I hate) when I think of noise rock.

It's a pure abrasive wall of noise with drums. I like "noise" but in an ambient sense. Lean a guitar up against a amp, let it feedback, and play some drums behind it... you're pretty much set.

What bands do you like? Just so I know what you are talking about?

I would say some of the melvins and some of the thrones stuff. Lightning bolt, arab on radar some locust and schellac. I know its a pretty broad request, and not all of that stuff fits into the noise rock box. I would say stuff with that general "feel".

Boredoms? The noise rock moniker is rather large and fuzzy.

Technically they are just psychedelia at its most extreme, but they are up there with the noisiest music I've ever heard, and I listen to some pretty whacked out stuff.

AAHHHH, I see... aparently you like GOOD noise rock. Very good to hear. Some of that I'd call more experimental than noise. Noise suggests noise. I know melvins, thrones and lightining bolt, they are fairly structured, just weird as hell. Have you heard the latest from Men's Recovery Project? Joe Preston (thrones) does a lot of work on that album, Thrones esque for sure. Poppy in a very very very weird sort of way.

I would also suggest The Wizardzz. The bass player from Lighting Bolt plays drums in it. Merzbow is just noise, but I actually haven't checked out Wolf Eyes, even though I have one of their albums. (:ssh

Check out some Sunburned Hand of The Man, they have noise in their sound.

A few bands/artists you should know about (don't know if they fit the noise rock catagory) John Zorn, Neu!, Raymond Scott, and Tangerine Dream... in fact, explore the whole Krautrock genre (german progressive rock, in some sense)

Weird weird stuff, totally different styles from each other, but highly experimental.

Man, Spazz and Eff on the Beach are Power-violence, not noise-rock! Don't front!

If you're looking for spastic, shrill, cocaine lindy-hop music you can't go wrong with the 3 big fashion-core bands: Daughters, The Locust, An Albatross. Also, not included, but of some interest probably, is Combatwoundedveteran. They're more hardcore, but should fulfill your desire for short, ear-shredding tuneage. If that is what you seek.

Check outThe Lots Of Noise Bands Page, many of them are noise-rock groups (Providence has the best per capita noise scene in the country. Better than Brooklyn, I would argue.) In particular, Alec K. Redfearn & the Eyesores, The Body, Fourhouse, The White Mice, Tiny Hawks, Chinese Stars, Made in Mexico and Athletic Automaton (all ex-Arab on Radar).

Aside from that, there's Fat Day, Amps for Christ, Bastard Noise, Afrirampo, The USAisaMonster, Unsane, and Japanther (one of my personal faves, but more lo-fi than noise).

Here's the webpages for the labels of some of the bands I mentioned, well worth checking out:

Load Records

Corleone Records

I disagree, I don't like Wolf Eyes either, but I like some of the Merzbow I've heard. Merzbow's discography is so massive that there isn't any comparison between the two. Some of it can be really hit-and-miss (as opposed to just miss-miss in WE's case), it depends on which release you pick up.

But if you're going to get into Noise for serious, after Merzbow & Masonna, I would reccommend D. Yellow Swans, Pleasurehorse, Prurient and Kites.

Against Will: Can you recommend some Merzbow that isn't just a wall of mindless noise?
