Non-funk Genre's with Slap Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, after 5-6 years playing bass I've just started to really get into slapping, and I have been appreciating it a lot more (I actually just placed an order for 'slap it' the other day). I've been able to find lots of cool funk and jazz stuff on here that has excellent slap bass, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any artists playing other styles of music with lots of slap? Preferably not metal either.

Just because it's slap bass doesn't mean it's funk. As a matter of fact, some the funkiest bass lines in the funk genera are finger style. Also , There's some crazy slap played in metal, Jazz, even bluegrass Some of the best slappers are not in funk bands(or bands that play funk)
Slap Bass - Slap METAL - YouTube
BABY WANT YOU WANT ME TO DO & PHONE BOOTH (SLAPPED BASS) ELVIS then ROBERT CRAY - YouTube Slap at around 2:17
Solo Bluegrass Bass Slap - (Freakin Awesome) - by "Willy" Jimenez - YouTube
Fred Frizz: Fretless Slap Bass Rock - YouTube On a fretless
As you can see, slap can be played in any style of music

TesseracT. Yeah, metal, but very little screaming. Mostly it's just crazy syncopation with ambiance over the top. Here's a version of one of their songs with acoustic guitars (normal rhythm section):

Patitucci used to slap more than he does these days. His first few solo records have some good playing in that regard.

I'd especially recommend "Mistura Fina", which is a kind of jazz-funk-Brazilian music fusion. It's a really good album, provided that the concept is appealing to you.

His first record as a leader, "John Patitucci", sounds pretty Elektric Band derivative, since he was in the middle of that chapter at the time. "On The Corner" is good, and a little more eclectic. The next one, "Sketchbook" is in my opinion the best of his initial albums. It's very stylistically diverse, has lots of great players, and Patitucci shows a great combination of chops and writing skills on that one.

Everything he's done in the last ten years or so is very subdued by comparison to that early stuff. Still good in its own way, but much less aggressive music generally.

I really like this one. I'm a bit of a metal head myself, and a hardcore warwick fan, lol. Love the tone of the infinity's.

Doesn't that Michael something-or-other try his hand at slapping occasionally?

hmmm... i should be able to help, some of my favorite bands are non-funk slapping bands, in fact i look for them all the time

my favorites are (some may have heavy funk influences but arent considered funk.)

-infectious Grooves (Robert Trujillo actually playing like he should) check out the song "Punk it up")

-Fishbone (Norwood Fisher, my favorite bassist next to jaco)

-311 (obviously, the older the better)

-incubus (THE OLDest crap like Fungus Amongus album is filled with slap.)

-Mr. Bungle (ahh my god, mike patton is the best vocalist backed up by a very underrated and unique bassist)

-Les Claypool (well, no ****)

-Faith No More

-Living Colour

-Jimmy's Chicken Shack (lots of good slap, kind of an incubus sounding band but better, and very underrated)

-Jane's Addiction

-Umphrey's McGee (Jam band, with occasional slap...check the song "1348", its my favorite)

-The Supervillains (ska band, sometimes throwss the slap in there)

-A Perfect Circle (check out the song "Thinking of You", great slap right off the start)

-Passafire (best reggae band around, very different than anything youve heard recently, i like them far more than sublime (!!!!!!?????), GREAT BASSIST.)

-Ballyhoo!

-Billy Joel (we didnt start the fire)

I apologize for my long list, if i'd recommend top 3- Fishbone, Passafire, Infectious Grooves
