Nordy vJ5 sound clip

I thought I'd finally post up a clip of my Nordy. This is a short excerpt from my trio's version of "all blues". Forget about the playing, I'm just trying to show what kind of tone my Nordy is capable of. It is just about as perfect for me as I've ever gotten. Enjoy!

Great clip and awesome tone! That's very similar to type of tone I strive for as well, nice tight bottom while still being punchy and articulate in the mids. Nice jazz tone. Were you using the F1 on the clip as well? If so, did you leave the amp flat and use the pre on the Nordy? I've been gassin for an F1 hard!

Thanks for the kind words! Actually, that is a straight from the DI to the board tone, with the pre on my Nordy set flat.

Tony, you have a great family of basses there. How do you like the tone of that J-Bass with the Bart electronics?

I have an MB F1 amp too. I love it!

Thanks Carlo. That MIJ 75 RI jazz is my baby. It was my main player for about 10 years, and then I found talkbass. If I had to only choose one bass to keep, it would be a tough choice between that and my Nordy.

It's funny, but I listed this thread over a year ago, and I still get these weird little emails from box.net telling me that somebody has viewed the above file. Ok, so which of you guys are checking out this embarrassing old clip of me playing without telling me?

I listened to it after the thread got bumped by you. I like it.

Can you tell me about your setup? Which nordy pickups are in that bass? What strings are you using?

Well, as I said that clip was posted over a year ago, so I can only speculate on the strings. The pickups are Nordstrand Dual Coils, wired to have only the inner coils of both pickups give sound, effectively making them single coils. The strings are probably Dunlop Stainless Steel.

Ah, so those are the modern pickups. Interesting. I'm researching pickups right now and I was looking at nordstrands and with this clip, now I'm torn between traditional and modern!

As I said, the pickups are the dual coils wired to effectively be single coils, so I'm not really using the "modern" part of the pickup if you see what I'm saying. If I could do it all over again with this bass, I'd most likely go with Carey's new 5 string elongated traditional single coils.

Ah, thanks for clarifying again. Which nordy pup would be the equivalent on a 4 string to his new elongated traditional single coil?

Nice. So that spec is kind of similar to my Sadowsky... single coils in 60's pickup position (roughly) with ash/maple. I like that spec... punchy but still growly, and bright if you want it to be. Very nice!

Probably just his 4 string size traditional single coil pickup.

Yeah, I thought I wanted the 70's position, but when I tried the inner coils on my pickups, which are as you said closer to 60's position, I found I liked the tone better.
