I don't care at all for the multivoice male bass harmony or whatever you call that, but I guess that's the Oak Ridge Boys trademark. Sure they've achieved, "making it their own," if that means making a great song into crap.
This really comes off as a pretty transparent marketing gimmick, you know, "Has-been C&W act revitalizes career by covering an edgy pop song."
It worked for Johnny Cash. (
Hurt in case anybody missed it.) But that's because Cash
meant it.
So they do it on piano, (just like Cash's Hurt, hmmm...) and it comes off sounding technically correct and sterile. And I hear some atmospheric synthy stuff in there too that is just gross.
Also, it's a ridiculously simple song which
anybody can cover and find some way to "make it their own," even me!
