Could have saved the Mods the trouble and just put it in Misc.

Bands:
-The Plot To Blow Up the Eiffel Tower (EVERYONE MUST HEAR THEM!)
-This Is My Fist (incredible!)
-Dillinger Four (FRESH!)
-Against Me! (reason punk rock doesn't suck yet)
-Ghost Mice (heartwrenching)
-Saw Wheels (ditto)
-The Bananas (most of the groups mentioned are on Plan-It-X records, which is a phenomenal label: www.plan-it-x.com)
-Team Dresch (Lesbians playing hardcore punk with fire, conviction, rage and honesty. Criminally overlooked)
-Erase Erratta (weird and fun)
-Lightning Bolt (hometown heroes)
-Daughters (Providence grindcore kings. <3)
-Sex Positions (Boston fresh hardcore band)
-Mclusky (shut up and get their latest two albums!)
-Les Nubians (wonderful voices, in french...some english)
-Sage Francis/Non-prophets (RI MC/duo. Vicious and hilarious)
-Grand Buffet (great hip-hop duo. awesome live show)
-Aesop Rock (Cerebral)
-Cannibal Ox (aggressive and dangerous duo)
-Lifter Puller (no one likes his voice...I still think he's great though)
-Mastodon (hurt people and love Mastodon)
-Lungfish (The musical equivalent of reading James Joyce)
-Nation of Ulysess (old school)
-Make Up (Who T(I)NC wishes they could be...weirdos)
-Discount (greatest pop-punk band ever? possibly)
-The Gits (rule)
-the Constantines (desparate but determined)
-the chinkees (wonderful, honest, catchy, experience)

and I'm spent.

Course of Empire - artsy metal stuff with two drummers and a serious Persian influence. Check them out.

Cymande -
Pretty cool funk band from London in the early 70's. Sort of make me think Meters/Curtis Mayfield/Mandrill.

I just stumbled onto a bunch of my old 45rpms from that era. Sounds like Bootsy...

...or maybe even David Hungate.

Cocteau Twins is my fav 'obscure' artist, but I'm not sure just how 'unknown' they'd be considered anymore.

weird! I almost put Swervedriver, but I didn't think they'd qualify as obscure. KOD might not be either, I dunno... Strange that we posted pretty much at the same time.

Don't be sad. They are no where near obscure. Either are about 10 bands in the initial post. Obscurity is relative I guess..

I'll second Radiohead and Cake from earlier on this list. (although I don't find either so obscure)
I've had people tell me at one time or another that they found these guys obscure: Frank Zappa, Les Claypool (Holy Mackeral / Frog Brigade) and They Might Be Giants
Again, I don't think any are all that obscure, but all are highly recomended listening.
